1. An engine has a mean failure rate of one (1) per week and repair time of two (2) weeks.
Determine the number of spare engines that needed to be stocked to obtain a service level
of 95%.

In this problem, the failure rate

365 ÷ 7 = 52
In the whole year we have 52 weeks base on the given problem every week there is a one
(1) failure rate.
52 failure rates in a year
The mean repair rate is two (2) weeks or 14 days
1 14
=
μ 365
Therefore:
λ 52 x 14
P= = =1.99
μ 365
0 1 2 3 4 5
1 1.99 1.98 1.31 .65 .26
1 2.99 4.97 6.28 6.93 7.19
1 0.67 .40 .21 .09 .04
This table shows the result for different values of n. The number of retables that needed to
be stocked is between four (4) and five (5) to obtain a service level of 95%.

2. The value of spares required to obtain a service level of 95% shall be four (4).
