Appraisal
(Week 5)
Date: 06 to 10 Sep 2021
Learning Objective
● LO 1.6 - Demonstrate the correct appraisal stage including the appropriate and relevant
information and requirements in planning a safe voyage.
● CMS 1.4.9.1 - Collect the information to plan a safe and environmentally sound voyage
plan, as per IMO Resolution A.893(21) par. 2
Performance Requirements
The student shall, at a minimum:
Demonstrate the correct appraisal stage including the appropriate and relevant
information and requirements in planning a safe voyage.
Determine the navigational warning and meteorological forecast from any source
information.
Determine the port regulation and other port information on the proposed voyage
Identify the different vessel traffic services and pilot reporting to be utilized in the
proposed voyage.
Identify marine environmental protection measures and information of other marine
habitats, areas and sanctuaries.
Calculate and interpolate the actual height of tide for vessel departure and ETA.
Calculate the vertical clearance under bridges, pylons, overhead cables etc.
Calculate the time of sunrise and sunset for the port of departure and arrival.

Week 5 - Activity
Collect all relevant information obtained from the charts, publications, radio
navigational warnings and other source information to plan a safe and environmentally
sound voyage plan for a voyage from Los Angeles to San Francisco.
1. Navigational warnings

2. Meteorological forecast

3. Port information and local regulation (use the Index to determine the port
information, page 365 to 371)

pilot/files/cp7/CPB7_WEB.pdf
4. VTS reporting - identify the different vessel traffic services and pilot reporting to be
utilized in this voyage.

5. Pilotage requirements and information exchange (use the Index to determine the
pilotage requirements, page 365 to 371)

pilot/files/cp7/CPB7_WEB.pdf
6. Tides and currents information - determine the tabulated height of tide for the port of
Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay on Sep 7 & Sep 8 respectively.

7. Using the tabulated tide table for the port of Los Angeles and San Francisco,
calculate the actual height of tide during departure Los Angeles and arrival San
Francisco.
8. Using the Chart 18650 or any source information, determine the Charted Height of
Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco-Oakland Bridge. Use the actual height of tide
to determine the vertical clearance of both bridges when the vessel arrive on 08 Sep,
2021 at 1500LT and the Mean High Water (the average of the highest high tides) in
Golden Gate is 5.23ft or 1.59m, and in San Francisco-Oakland is 5.70ft or 1.74m
