Answer

Exercise 1.

A. The picture shows that the amplitude of the solid wave from the x-axis is 1 cm, therefore the
amplitude A is

A= 1 cm

B. The picture shows that the wavelength of the solid wave has 2 cm, therefore the wavelength
λ is

λ= 2cm

C. Comparing the dashed and dotted waves shows that the dashed wave is twice as long as the
dotted one. The dashed waves is times two long to dotted one.

D. The wavelength of the two-the dashed and solid wave have the same value but the two have
different corresponding amplitude.

λdashed=λsolid

Exercises 2

A. The frequency = 1,700 Hz, the wavelength λ can be found from the relation v=vλ,

The speed of sound in air = 340 ms-¹, we have

340=1,700 x λ

340 m-¹÷1,700Hz=2/10m= 0.2m

The wavelength of a sound wave extending in air with frequency v = 1,700 Hz is thus

X = 20 cm.

B. The sound wave with frequency=1,700 Hz but now in a metal where its speed is much higher,
-5, 100 ms 1. Base form this data and the equation

v=Vλ

it follows that 5,100=1.700 × λ

λ=5, 100 ms -¹/ 1,700=51m/17m=3m

The wavelength of a sound wave with frequency is v= 1,700Hz thus

λ = 300 cm

C. The radio waves with frequencies = 103.4 MHz and 855 kHz. propagating with the speed of
light, that is approximately = 3 x 10 ms. Correlate wavelengths λ can be found from v=Vλ

For the FM waves, v= 103.4 MHz, so

3x10=103.4 x 10⁶ x λ

λ=3 x 10⁸ m-¹/103.4 x 10⁶= 3/103.4x 10²m= 0.3m.

While for the AM band with frequency = 855 kHz we have 3x10⁸x855x 10³ m=300m

Exercise 3

A.

The frequency of an electromagnetic wave is given by

V=speed of light/ wavelength= 3 x 10⁸ ms-¹/λm

V=3x10³Hz/10-³Hz=3x10¹¹Hz.

B.

The range of λx ray wavelengths is

10-¹²m<λx <10-⁸ m.

v=speed of light/wavelength= 3x10⁸ ms-¹/λm=3x10/10-⁸Hz= 3x10¹⁶Hz
