INVENTIONS IN PRE- COLONIAL
PERIOD IN PHILIPPINES

Pre-Colonial literature on the Philippines is essential to study because it

reveals the foundations of the literary prose demonstrated during the

Spanish colonization. Studying literature is enjoyable because it allows us to

incorporate facts from our own history. They already had a calendar, an

alphabet, a number system, a weighing and measuring system, and a

weighing and measuring system. Farmers, shipbuilders, miners, and weavers

were already active in the Philippines. The Banaue Rice Terraces are an

example of pre-Spanish era Filipino engineering at its finest.

ERYTHROMYCIN (1952)

- The product was launched commercially in 1952 under the brand name

Ilosone (after the Philippine region of Iloilo where it was originally

collected). Erythromycin was formerly also called Ilotycin.

- In 1949, Filipino doctor Abelardo Aguilar was testing micro-organisms he

had isolated from soil samples in his back garden when he chanced upon

bacteria that would later lead to the development of the antibiotic

erythromycin.

- Erythromycin is an antibiotic. It's widely used to treat chest infections,

such as pneumonia, skin problems, such as acne and rosacea, dental

abscesses, and sexually transmitted infections. Erythromycin is used in

children, often to treat ear infections or chest infections.

BAMBOO INCUBATOR (1941)

- An Apparatus invented in 1941, used to maintain environmental conditions suitable for new-

born baby. it is used in pre-term birth or for some ill full- time babies. the invention of the

incubator in 1880 ignited a dramatic outpouring of popular and professional excitement over

the prospect of reducing premature infant mortality. The invention of the incubator itself was

less significant than the development of a system to support the device.

- Del Mundo revolutionized Philippine medicine, making major breakthroughs in immunization

and in the treatment of jaundice, and providing healthcare to thousands of poor families. She

is credited with studies that led to the invention of the incubator and a jaundice relieving

device.

- In a bid to help families in rural communities without electricity, del Mundo invented a

bamboo incubator in 1941. According to a biographical report on del Mundo by the Philippine

Center for Investigative Journalism, the physician's makeshift incubator was composed of two

native laundry baskets made of bamboo.

VIDEO PHONE (1955)

- A patented “photo phone signal separator network” is a two-way

television telephone, or videophone. Zara, a physicist, devised a system in

1954 that allows two people to view each other on a television screen

while conversing on the phone.

- A videophone is a telephone with a video display, capable of

simultaneous video and audio for communication between people in real

time. Videoconferencing implies the use of this technology for a group or

organizational meeting rather than for individuals, in a video conference.

Zara also discovered the physical law of electric resistance called the

zara effect around 1930.

DISCOVERIES DURING THE PRE-

COLONIAL PEROID

- Scientific and technological development in the Philippines began in the pre-colonial

period. Even before the Spaniards came to the Philippine islands, early Filipino settlers

were already using the certain plants and herbs as medicines. Systems of farming and

animal-raising were also implemented. Moreover, early Filipinos had also developed

different modes of transportation, whether terrestrial or maritime.

- A complicated engineering feat was achieved by the natives of the Cordilleras when

they built rice terraces by hand. Through these terraces, the people were able to cultivate

crops on the mountainsides in cold temperatures. They incorporated an irrigation system

that uses water from the forests and mountain tops to achieve an elaborate farming

system. the rice terraces of the cordilleras, which are still functional show the innovative

and ingenious way of the natives to survive in an otherwise unfriendly environments.

INVENTIONS DURING COLONIAL

PERIOD IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Spanish colonial period of

the Philippines began when explorer

Ferdinand Magellan came to the islands in 1521 and claimed it as a colony

for the Spanish Empire. The period lasted until the Philippine Revolution in

1898. You can't just forget the three-and-a-half century Spanish influence in

the Philippines.

BRICK MAKING MACHINE

- Rizal was the first to invent the first brick making machine in the

country. It was said to be producing 6,000 bricks a day, a project

anticipating perhaps what was to be the first National Housing

Authority's objective.

Rizal was not an inventive wizard like Thomas Edison but he did have a

talent for invention. He also invented a wooden machine for making

bricks which turned out about 6,000 bricks daily.

SULPAKAN

- Rizal invented a lighter which he called sulpakan, and sent it to

bluementritt in 1887 as a gift.

the lighter used a compressed air

mechanism.

- Rizal gave it to his friend as a gift that he himself invented. he

invented this when he is studying medicine in Calamba, laguna.

QUICK INK

- Francisco Quisumbing is said to be a Filipino botanist claimed to be

the inventor of Quink ink used by The Parker Pen Company. He studied

in the Philippines and the US, gaining a BSc from the University of the

Philippines School of Agriculture, Los Baños in 1918 and an MSc in 1921.

- It was released in 1941 as "51" ink, along with the Parker 51 pen in 1947

it was made somewhat less corrosive, and renamed "Superchrome".

- Parker Quink Ink is full of surprises – not only is it a classic ink used for

dip pens and fountain pens, it is also a beautiful medium to use for

illustration and painting. It is a non-waterproof ink and as a result can

be used in many interesting ways that are different to how waterproof

ink can be used.

means of construction. Walls,

- Colonization by the Spaniards provided the Philippines with modern

roads, bridges, and other large

infrasctures were built using some of the engineering skills and tools

brought by the Spaniards. In addition, the Spanish government

developed health and education systems that were enjoyed by the

principalia class. The American occupation modernized almost all

aspects of life in the Philippines. They established a government

agency, the bureau of Science, for the sole purpose of nurturing

development in the field of science and technology.

INVENTIONS AND DISCOVERIES

DURING POST COLONIAL PERIOD

-U.S colonial rule of the

archipelago was loosened during the

Commonwealth Period of 1935-1946, a period after which the Philippines

gained its independence.

-The Philippines is a postcolonial republic that gained independence from

the United States in 1946.

MANGO FLOWERING

Barba developed a tissue culture procedure for the banana plant which

enabled production of large quantities of planting materials that were

robust and disease-free. He also developed a tissue culture procedure for

sugar cane that allowed the rapid production of large amounts of disease-

free planting materials.

His techniques proved effective, with 400 trees aged 10–12 years old

flowering within one week to one month of first being sprayed with

potassium nitrate. His study, titled Induction of Flowering of the Mango by

Chemical Spray was named best paper by the Crop Science Society of the

Philippines (CSSP) in 1974.

PC CHIPSET (1984)
Computers. In computing, the term

chipset commonly refers to a set of

specialized chips on a computer's motherboard or an expansion card. In

personal computers, the first chipset for the IBM PC AT of 1984 was the NEAT

chipset developed by Chips and Technologies for the Intel 80286 CPU.

Diosdado “Dado” Banatao invented a chip that is now found in most computers.

In the small barrio of Malabbac in the town of Iguig, Cagayan, Philippines grew

a man who has now established a name in the tech industry.

An innovator, Banatao is credited for devising a more efficient way to link

computers, by simplifying the computer design with fewer chips, that has made

computers smaller, more portable and more affordable.

MODULAR HOUSING SYSTEM

Rapid urbanization and poor construction has left plenty of Pinoys homeless in

the city. This encouraged Edgardo Vasquez to make the modular housing

system. This made use of pre-fabricated materials that can withstand typhoons

and earthquakes. Despite its resistance to natural disasters, the modular

housing system costs less than traditional building materials and is versatile to

adapt to various housing architectures.

DISCOVERIES DURING POST

COLONIAL PERIOD
POST-COLONIAL PERIOD

After achieving independence from the

colonizers, the Philippines, under

different administrations, continued to pursue programs in science and

technology. Each leadership had its own science and technology agenda.

However, it is important to note than some Philippine presidents posted more

developments in the field than others.

One of the presidents who ushered in advancements in science and technology

was former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos. Under his term, many

agencies in science and technology were established and strengthened,

including the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services

Administration (PAGASA) In place of the abolished Weather Bureau; the National

Academy of science and Technology (NAST); and the reconstituted National

Science and Technology Authority (originally established in 1958 as the National

Sciences and development Board and now the Department of Science and

Technology),among others. Marcos saw that key to nation- building is the

continued development of science and technology. The process in science and

technology continued even after his dictatorial rule and the presidents after him

left their own legacies in the field.
