TYPES OF COMMUNICATION
1. Verbal
Communication
◦ Verbal communication refers to the form of communication in which message
is transmitted verbally; communication is done by word of mouth.
◦ It is one of the most common types, often used during presentations, video
conferences and phone calls, meetings and one-on-one conversations.

Verbal Communication is further divided into:
Oral Communication
In oral communication, Spoken words are used. It includes face-to-face
conversations, speech, telephonic conversation, video, radio, television, voice over
internet. In oral communication, communication is influence by pitch, volume, speed and
clarity of speaking.
Written Communication
In written communication, written signs or symbols are used to communicate. A
written message may be printed or hand written. In written communication message can
be transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc. Message, in written communication,
is influenced by the vocabulary & grammar used, writing style, precision and clarity of
the language used.
2. Non-Verbal
Communication
Nonverbal communication is the sending or receiving of wordless messages. We
can say that communication other than oral and written, such as gesture, body
language, posture, tone of voice or facial expressions, is called nonverbal
communication. Nonverbal communication is all about the body language of
speaker.

Nonverbal communication helps receiver in interpreting the message received.


Often, nonverbal signals reflects the situation more accurately than verbal
messages. Sometimes nonverbal response contradicts verbal communication
and hence affect the effectiveness of message.

Formal Communication
Formal communication, certain rules, conventions and principles are followed while communicating
message. Formal communication occurs in formal and official style. Usually professional settings,
corporate meetings, conferences undergoes in formal pattern.
Formal communication, use of slang and foul language is avoided and correct pronunciation is required.
Authority lines are needed to be followed in formal communication.
Informal Communication
Informal communication is done using channels that are in contrast with formal communication
channels. It’s just a casual talk. It is established for societal affiliations of members in an organization
and face-to-face discussions. It happens among friends and family. In informal communication use of
slang words, foul language is not restricted. 
It doesn’t follow authority lines. In an organization, it helps in finding out staff grievances as people
express more when talking informally. Informal communication helps in building relationships.
3. Written
Communication
Written communication is the act of writing, typing or printing symbols like
letters and numbers to convey information.

It is helpful because it provides a record of information for reference. Writing is


commonly used to share information through books, pamphlets, blogs, letters,
memos and more. Emails and chats are a common form of written
communication in the workplace.

4. Visual
Communication
Visual communication is the act of using photographs, art,
drawings, sketches, charts and graphs to convey information.
Visuals are often used as an aid during presentations to provide
helpful context alongside written and/or verbal communication.
Because people have different learning styles, visual
communication might be more helpful for some to consume ideas
and information.

Face-to-Face (Dyadic) Communication
Interpersonal Communication manifests face-to-face interaction
between people who are aware of each other.
Interpersonal Communication is a complicated process through
which two or more people who are sometimes called the “sender”
and the “receiver” constantly send and receive messages.
It involves listening and seeing , interpreting the message.
Non-verbal Communication
Non-verbal Communication is an important part of interpersonal
communication that includes gesture, body language, facial
expression, posture and distance and other actions which go along
with the spoken communication.
Interpretation of non-verbal communication though essential is
oftentimes difficult.
Without it, the communication seems flat and quite monotonous.
Passing Message
Passing of messages through more than one person is
common but risky way of communicating.
If the message is written, then the chance being chanced
is slight, although it might get lost or arrive late. However,
when oral messages are passed from person to person, the
message might be changed.
Letter Writing
Letter writing is a good way for two people to communicate.
Information is seldom subject to misunderstanding.
Letters, memoranda, or short notes form a small but important
part of
Communication between and among people.
Literacy is a must for this type of communication and should be
supported and promoted everywhere.
Mass Media

Mass media includes any form of communication where one


person or group of people is able to communicate with a very large
group of people.
Mass media is very useful for entertainment and for sending
information to a great number of people.
Some experts feel that mass media simply reflect the taste and
values of society rather than form.
Intrapersonal Communication
 The ability to use what one knows and feels in order to send,
receive, and store information intensifies the desire to communicate
intrapersonally.
 The message that anyone receives becomes an input which is
decoded and understood. In the process of decoding the message
received and encoding new messages to send, the individual has to
execute all these, geared and shielded by all the experiences, beliefs
pertaining to the message, attitudes towards the message and total
personality.
