INTRODUCTION

● Nagaland in the North-East of India is home to 16


main tribes and several sub-tribes each distinguished
by custom, dress and dialect.

● Loin Loom or back strap loom called to be the oldest


and simplest used in the weaving of the cloth is the
common loom used by the tribes of Nagaland.

● It is a simple contraption that consist of 6 bamboos


stick held parallel to each other.

● Its the continuous wrap i.e the set of horizontal threads


is stretched between these sticks.
● The loom is adjustable to the body of the
wearer and weaving is done without any
mechanical adjustment.

● Each naga tribe has its own motif and design


which forms it distinct identity.

● The Loin loom consist of continuous wrap


between two parallel bamboos.
HISTORY
● The state was inaugurated on 1st December, 1963 and has
eleven (11) districts.

● There are 16 main Tribe.

● Some tribes themselves trace their ancestry to an indo


Tibetan who migrated to India.

● There is no recorded history of when and how weaving


among these tribes began.

● A woman from Ao Naga Tribe initiated the tradition of


weaving.
● According to her she has some magical power
and special link to supernatural world.

● It was believed the tradition of weaving is


started to separate the clans from each other.
