TOPIC 2

Q1
Calculate the average U-value of the wall constructed in overall size of 5m length x 2.8m
height. The wall has an opening window (1400mm x 800mm) and door (1900mm x 750mm).
Each of U-value for the components are indicated in Table.

Q2
Calculate the u-value of a wall that comprises of 105mm outer brick, 50mm cavity, 100mm
inner aerated lightweight concrete block and 15mm plaster? Thermal conductivity and thermal
resistance values are given in Table Q2.
Table Q2
Q3

Calculate the ‘U’ value for the wall shown above.

Q4
Calculate the total rate of heat gain of the building size of 6m long x 3m width x 2.75m
height. The construction has the following U-values (W/m2 0C) for building
components;

• 2 nos Windows (1.2m x 1.2m for each window) = 2.8

• Door (0.9m x 2.10m) = 2.4
• Walls = 0.45
• Flat Roof = 0.8
• Floor = 0.7

The inside temperature is maintained at 240C while the outside temperature is 400C.
The volumetric specific heat capacity of the air is taken as 1300J/m3 0C and there are
2.5 air changes per hour.

Q5

FIGURE 1 shows a cavity wall of an existing house has outer and inner brickwork
leaves each 115 mm with a 50 mm air gap between them, finished with a 25 mm layer
of plaster inside. The relevant values of thermal conductivity (k-value), are: brickwork
0.73 W/m K and plaster 0.46 W/m K. The standard thermal resistances (R-value), are:
outside surface (Rso) 0.055 m2 K/W, inside surface (Rsi) 0.123 m2 K/W and air gap 0.18
m2 K/W.
Calculate the followings:

i. The U-value of the existing wall.

ii. The U-value of the wall if the cavity is completely filled with foamed urea
formaldehyde (k-value = 0.026 W/m K).
