JURY COMMENTS:
“The building offers
an example of precast’s
easy integration with other
materials. The design team
was able to produce seamless
pattern(s) on the precast panels
to match different materials and
elements, such as the prefinished
metal louver sunshades. The
precast panel definition is a clear
expression of solid and durable
construction, which is one of the
many advantages of precast
construction.”

“This particular structure shows that precast concrete does not have to express very heavy and massive weight, but can give
you a feeling of lightness and can also work well with other materials. This structure really integrates materials with the pre-
cast, with the brick finish, and with metal work and does so without trying to imitate or pretend to be something that it’s not.
It’s an unabashedly clean and well-detailed parking structure.
It’s also nice to see how this structure actually fits into its urban context; it’s a really fine balance in design and is difficult to
achieve. You don’t see the cars, but yet you know it’s a parking structure. It fits really well into the downtown historic district
of its city. It provides a scale that is appropriate to the pedestrian nature of the street and becomes a very good neighbor.”

JURY COMMENTS:
“An extraordinarily clever use of precast,
this public library is designed to take good
advantage of different aspects of precast
… texture, pattern, and form. We’re par-
ticularly impressed with the use of texture
on the precast material—the striation,
the shingle context. It really makes good
use of the material and helps integrate it
into the scale of the surrounding area. It’s
actually a lovely building that really fits
into its context. It’s got both fine attention
to detail and excellent overall massing and
building organization.”

JURY COMMENTS:
“This is a remarkable example of a stadium that is cleanly designed. It’s a 7500-seat
stadium, and it actually feels more modest than that. It doesn’t feel overwhelm-
ing; it doesn’t feel like a huge place but something that could be comfortable
if there were only 1000 people there but also could be quite delightful if
there were 10,000 people. The tubular, cylindrical shape of the precast
elements expresses very well, with clean expression of the
stadium seating area and steps. Precast is a good material to
use in an outdoor environment, and it is nicely detailed
and used to its advantage to showcase what one can
do with the material.”

JURY COMMENTS:
“From an architectural point of view, this structure fits into
an urban landscape that is composed of old office buildings,
some parking structures, and some residential lofts. What
really makes the structure work is that the vertical geometry
for its windows ties it in with the rest of the city. From a
non-architectural point of view, the clarity of the structural
system, the symmetrical structural system, seems sensible.”

JURY COMMENTS:
“All major components of this project are made of precast
concrete. The structure meets the owner’s requirements for
flexibility and long spans, and it accomplished this on a very
short and tight schedule. This project was originally envi-
sioned as a steel structure but was converted to total precast.
It’s also a well-engineered project. Given all these reasons,
the jury believes that this project is worth the all-precast
award.”

JURY COMMENTS:
“The innovative features implemented into this total precast building make it worthy of award. This
is not the first total precast building, and it won’t be the last, but there is definitely something new and
unique about the use of so-called W-beams. These beams are apparently an upgrade to a typical inverted
tee girder, but they enable the structure to provide continuity and provide for continuous moment frames
without costly connections. The beauty of it is that it also provides for structural integrity, something we
all anticipate will be implemented in the next building code cycle. By already implementing structural
integrity into the design of our structures, our industry will be ready tomorrow when it becomes reality.”
