THE INSTITUTION OF ENGINEERS, BANGLADESH

AMIE SECTION “B” (ELECT) EXAMINATION, APRIL, 2011

Sub: Power System Analysis

Full Marks : 100 Time : 3 Hours

The Question are of equal value.

There are SEVEN questions in this paper. Answer any FIVE

1. A fault occurs at bus 3 of the power system shown in the figure. Find
positive sequence component of current in phase ‘a’ with (i) Z f = 0.0 and (ii)
Zf = j0.1 p.u for
(I) single line to ground,
(II) double line and
(III) double line to ground fault.
Given: Generators 1 and 2: Xd// = X1 =X2 = 20%, X0 = 4% and Xn = 5%
Transformers T1 and T2: X = 8%
Transmission line: X1 = X2 = 15%, X0 = 50%
Vf = 1.0 p.u.

2. (a) Show the connection diagram of the appropriate sequence networks

for the different types of unsymmetrical faults when the faults occur at the
terminals of an unloaded alternator through an impedance of Zf.
(b) A 500 MVA, 22KV, Y-connected generator is operating at no load at
rated voltage and its neutral is solidly grounded. Find the ratio of
subtransient line current for a single line to ground fault to that for a
symmetrical three phase fault. How many ohms of reactance in the neutral

would limit the subtransient line current for a single line to ground fault to
that for a 3φ symmetrical fault. Given: X// = X2 = j0.15 P.U. and X0 = j0.05
P.U.

3. (a) Develop a relationship between negative sequence component of line

current and that of phase current in a Δ- connected circuit.

(b) Three identical Y connected resistors of three phase rating 2300 volt and
500 KVA consumes Ia1 = 0.9857<43.60 p.u., Ia2 = 0.2346<250.30 p.u. and Ia0
= 0.0. The voltage components at the load terminals are V an0 = 0.0, Van1 =
0.9857<43.60 p.u and Van2 = 0.2346<250.30 p.u. Find the total power
absorbed by the resistors in KW.

4. (a) Three phase ratings of a three winding transformer are; Primary: 15

MVA, 11KV, Secondary: 15 MVA, 220 KV, Tertiary: 5 MVA, 33 KV. The
leakage impedances are Zps = 5% on 15 MVA, 11 KV, Zpt= 5% on 15
MVA, 11KV, Zst = 10% on 7.5 MVA, 110KV base. Calculate Zs
considering a base of 15MVA and 11 KV in the primary circuit.

(b) Draw the reactance diagram for the following power system. Consider a
base of 13.8 KV and 50 MVA in the circuit of generator 1.
G1: 20 MVA, 13.8 KV, X// = 20%
G2: 30 MVA, 18 KV, X// = 20%
T1: 25 MVA, 220Y/13.8Δ KV, x = 10%
T2: 10 MVA, 127/18 KV, x = 10% (single phase bank)

5. What are the information obtained and what are the data required for load
flow study. Using Gauss-Seidal method obtain load flow solution (one

iteration) of the system shown in the figure. The reactances are given in per
unit on a base of 100 MVA. Consider V 1 = 1.2<00 p.u., V2 = 1.0 p.u, P2 =
60.0 MW, P3 = -80.0 MW and Q3 = - 60.0 MVAR. Neglect the generator
reactance.

6. Draw a typical input-output curve of a generating unit. Incremental fuel

costs in dollars per megawatt hours for a plant consisting of two units are
given by

λ1 = 0.008 PG1 + 8.0

λ2 = 0.0096 PG2 + 6.4

Consider that both the units are operating at all times and the total load
varies from 250 MW to 1250 MW. The maximum and minimum loads on
each unit are 625 and 100 MW, respectively. Find the incremental fuel cost
of the plant and the allocation of loads between the units for the minimum
cost of various total lodas (at an interval of 50 MW).

7. (a) What is a critical clearing angle? Explain how equal area criterion can
be used to find the critical clearing angle.
(b) A three phase fault occurs in one of the twoparallel lines as shown in the
figure. Find the critical clearing angle for clearing fault with the
simultaneous opening of breakers ‘C’ and ‘D’. Consider that the generator
was delivering 1.0 P.U. power just before the fault.
