Unit 5 – Present Continuous


1. Present Continuous Forms in Affirmative and Negative Statements (p. 115 & 116)
a. I am able to write affirmative and negative statements in the present continuous with
the words and cues given. Use contractions if possible.
Ex. She/ play the song - She’s playing the song.

b. I am able to complete a sentence with the present continuous form of a verb given
and use contractions if possible.
Ex. I cook dinner. I’m cooking dinner now.

2. The correct spelling of the -ing form of verbs (p. 117)


a. I am able to write the correct spelling of the -ing form of the verb given.
Ex. Refer- referring

b. I can complete a sentence with the correct -ing form of the verb in parentheses.
Ex. Anna _______ (take) Spanish classes. Anna is taking Spanish classes.

3. The Present Continuous – Use (p. 119)


a. I am able to complete a sentence by choosing the correct verb and writing it in the
present continuous form.
Ex. The babies __________ weight. Gain eat listen try
The babies are gaining weight.

4. Questions with the Present Continuous Yes/ No questions, WH questions, and Subject WH-
Questions (p. 120)
a. I can unscramble words to form questions.
Ex. Charlie/for us/waiting/ where/ is
Where is Charlie waiting for us?
b. I am able to read a question and decide whether it is correct or not. If it is incorrect, I
can change the sentence to be correct.
Ex. Whom is studying American Culture? Incorrect
Who is studying American Culture?

5. Present Continuous vs. The Simple Present- forms and Uses (p. 124 & 125)
a. I can change a simple present sentence into a present continuous form and use
contractions if possible.
Ex. I live in an apartment.
I’m living in an apartment.
b. I am able to complete each sentence with the correct simple present or present
continuous form of the verb in parentheses.
Ex. Sarah is happy. She _________ (smile). is smiling

6. Action and Nonaction Verbs (p. 127)


a. I can recognize action and nonaction verbs in a sentence and whether they should be
in the present simple or present continuous form and recognize if they are correct in a
sentence.
Ex. Choose the correct sentence.
a. Ted’s new house looks expensive.
b. Ted’s new house is looking expensive.

1. The Future with Will- Forms, Statements, yes/No questions, short answers, and Wh-
Questions and uses (pgs. 137 & 138)
a. I can unscramble words to form a question or statement.
Ex. Help/who/me/will
Who will help me?
b. I can choose the correct word/s from a box to complete a question and
answer.
Ex. Q: ______ is Sam going to stay? (where , who, when, will) Where
A: In a house.

c. I can unscramble a sentence writing affirmative or negative statements with


will and contractions when possible.
Ex. Joey/ graduate/ next year (no)
Joey won’t graduate next year.

2. The Future with Be Going To – Forms, Statements, Ye/No questions, short answers,
and wh- questions
a. I can unscramble words to form a sentence or question.
Ex. Sleep/where/you/are/going/to
Where are you going to sleep?
b. I can complete a sentence with the correct form of be going to and the verb in
parentheses and use contractions if possible.
Ex. We’re ___not going to finish__________________ the game. (not finish)

3. The future with Be Going to- uses and Choosing Will or Be going to (p. 142 & 143)
a. I can use cues to write affirmative or negative statements using be going to.
Ex. He / not play the piano.
He’s not going to play the piano.
b. I can decide if a statement is a prediction or a previous plan. (p. 143)
Ex. Robots will take some jobs away (Prediction)
I’m going to be a teacher. (previous plan)
c. I can complete a sentence with the correct form of either Will or Be Going to.
Ex. It ___________snow tomorrow. Will or Is going to

4. The future with Time Clauses and If Clauses (p. 146)


a. I am able to complete a sentence with the correct verb and use WILL for
future clauses.
Ex. Scott ___will live_______(live) with a Chinese family when he
__moves_____(move) to Shanghai.
