Notes

“Chapter,” Book, publisher (date).

- Summary
Exposition: A baby appears to have magical powers; he is able to float. The baby’s father
cares about him very much.

Rising action: The father starts to stop his son from floating because the neighbors are judging
them. The son, however, keeps trying to float while his father keeps trying to stop him from
floating. The father’s condition seems horrible.

Climax: The son manages to escape from the father. The father eventually catches him and
drags him away. He yells at him and, in doing so, the son cries. The father carries him to the
swing.

Falling action: The son and father ride the swing together. The father finally accepts his son,
and the son starts floating.

Denouement: They start being themselves and finally get to be happy, not caring about the
judgement of the others.

Theme

1
Embrace your uniqueness and don’t try too hard to fit in. Just be yourself. Yes, I certainly
believe in the author’s point of view that people should be true to who they are. The author’s
theme is that Asian Americans should not have to live in fear. I agree with his theme because
humans should not be segregated due to where they come from. I also believe that the author
is biased towards liberalism. He believes that simply letting his son float will solve the
problem. In other words, he believes that freedom is the cure for the problem that is associated
with his theme .

- Relation to Other Works

Yes, the situation and the characters all remind me of Ruby Bridges. She was the very first
African American to attend an all-white public school. At first, she was heavily discriminated
against, but as the years passed, she paved the way for other African American children. The
story “Float” is unique as it unironically uses a superpower to convey an important theme in
life, while other stories would probably use scenarios that are more realistic.

- Personal Thoughts or Feelings

I feel like what the father did to his son was extremely wrong, hiding him away from society.
In the end, all the father wanted was to protect his son out of love and nothing less. Yes, I truly
connect with what the author was trying to convey. Growing up, I have fallen into the trap of
“trying to fit in” with others.
