LAB EXPERIMENT -7

Aim of the experiment: To determine the heat transfer coefficient

between Pin – Fin and air and thereby the efficiency of a Pin-Fin
under forced convection mode.

Summary of the Experiment:

Fins are the extended surface protruding from a surface or body and
they are meant for increasing the heat transfer rate between the
surface and the surrounding fluid by increasing heat transfer area.
They are used in our daily life appliances they are attached to the
condenser tubes present at the back of refrigerator.

Heat transfer coefficient under forced convection:

Forced convection is a special type of heat transfer in which fluids

are forced to move, in order to increase the heat transfer. This,
forcing can be done with a pump, suction device or other.

A brass fin of circular cross section in fitted across a long rectangular

duct. The other end of the duct is connected to the suction side of a
blower and the air flows past the fin perpendicular to the axis. One
end of the fin projects outside the duct and is heated by a heater.
Temperature at five points along the length of the fin. The air flow
rate is measured by an orifice meter fitted on the delivery side of the
blower. The apparatus consists of a pin-fin placed inside an open
duct the other end of the duct to connected to suction side of a
blower the delivery side of a blower is taken on through on orifice
meter to atmosphere ,the air flow rate can be varied by the blower
speed regular and can be measured on the u tube manometer
connected to one end of the pin fin. The panel of the apparatus
consists of voltmeter, ammeter and digital temperature indicator,
heat regulator in it.

Efficiency of a Pin-fin under forced convection:

In forced convection method in order to determine the efficiency of

Pin-Fin under forced convection method what we need to do first is
to close the duct cover which is placed over the fin and then we
need to start the blower. With the help of the dimmer stat we can
adjust the voltage about 100-110V which is supplied to the heater.
Then we need to note down the readings such as manometer
readings and temperature after the system reaches a steady state.
