3.1 Overview

This chapter describes how to mount the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator in 600 mm
equipment racks.

3.2 Environmental and mounting constraints

This section describes site requirements for the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator and
provides information about:
• environmental and mounting requirements
• airflow for the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator

Environmental and mounting requirements

Ensure that the environmental conditions meet GR-63-CORE.
The following is a list of environmental and mounting requirements for an ERAM-A
Remote Aggregator:
• The minimum cooling airflow for an ERAM-A Remote Aggregator mounted
horizontally in a Central Office (CO) or Controlled Environment Vault (CEV) is
0.7 m3/min with a 25 PPI air filter installed. In accordance with GR-3028-CORE,
airflow direction is (S) SL-SR when mounted horizontally.
• The minimum cooling airflow for an ERAM-A Remote Aggregator mounted in an
OSP cabinet is 1.1 m3/min with no air filter installed. Only vertical deployments are
supported. In accordance with GR-3028-CORE, airflow direction is bottom inlet top
exhaust).
• The maximum electrical power consumption and thermal dissipation capacity is
80 W, 2 A at 40 V (two 5 A fuses, field replaceable) for the ERAM-A Remote
Aggregator.
• To prevent the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator from overheating, avoid installing the
shelf adjacent to any other equipment that exhausts or takes in cooling air.
• Any ERAM-A Remote Aggregator deployments in closed cabinets must be in
GR-487 or GR-3108-CORE Class 2 cabinets, where the cabinets provide maximum
65° C inlet air to the shelf fans at a cabinet external ambient temperature of 46° C, and
full solar loading including any preheating of cabinet airflow by other equipment.
• Closed cabinets are not recommended for ERAM-A Remote Aggregator deployments
in COs, only open relay racks. If closed cabinets must be used, the cabinets must
provide a maximum 50° C inlet air to the shelf fans at a CO external ambient
temperature of 50° C at 1800 m altitude (GR-63 CO conditions). The cabinet must not
restrict shelf airflow or add temperature rise above GR-63 CO conditions, including
a preheating of cabinet airflow by other equipment.
• The use of fan filters in the fan unit of the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator depends on
the installation location:
• In CO and CEV deployments, the fan unit of the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator should
be operated with a fan filter installed. These filters must be changed every three months
or sooner, depending on conditions; otherwise, overheating and thermal failure may
result. Use only new, Alcatel-Lucent approved fan filters.
• In OSP cabinets deployments, the shelf fan unit must be operated without fan filters;
otherwise, overheating and thermal failure may result.

10 / 44 Released 3HH 06220 AAAA RJZZA Edition 01

3 — Installing the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator

• The intake and exhaust of all shelf mounting configurations must not contain any
obstructions caused by cabinet mounting hardware, rack hardware, or other electronic
equipment in the areas shown in Figure 3-1. The intake and exhaust should not
obstruct or interfere with shelf-level airflows so that bulk airflows drop below the
minimum cooling airflow for the shelf.
• Avoid operating the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator with its fan unit removed or
non-operational; overheating or thermal failure will result if the shelf is operated too
long without a fan unit installed.

Warning — When used in the vertical mounting orientation, the

ERAM-A Remote Aggregator or shelves must be mounted above concrete
or some other non-combustible surface.

4.3 Grounding connections

This section provides information about making ground connections to an ERAM-A

Remote Aggregator.

General
Grounding the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator provides safety for the electrical devices in
the shelf by drawing current away from the shelf. Grounding also prevents the equipment
from being energized if there is an internal power fault on the shelf. and keeps ESD
current away from internal electrical components. See the 7330 ISAM FTTN Safety
Manual for more information about ESD measures.
Grounding connections are made to two grounding points on the chassis of the ERAM-A
Remote Aggregator.

Prerequisites
The following tools and hardware are required to make the grounding connections.

Tools required
You need the following tools:
• antistatic wrist strap
• torque wrench
• #2 Phillips screwdriver

Hardware required
You need the following parts:
• one ground cable; available options are:

4.4 Power cabling

This section provides information about installing the power cabling for an ERAM-A
Remote Aggregator that uses a single or dual -48 Vdc or -60 Vdc power supply.

General
The ERAM-A Remote Aggregator operates with -48 Vdc or -60 Vdc supplied by battery
power sources in the CO. This power is provided by the Power Distribution Frame (PDF)
to the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator.

Warning — The dc supply to the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator must be

protected by the use of an approved external slow-blow fuse or single-pole
breaker sized greater than 5 A but less than the maximum required to
protect the 0.75 mm2 power feed cables.
A readily accessible disconnect device as defined in IEC 60950-1, such as
a circuit breaker, must be incorporated into the building installation
wiring.

Cable routing
Power cables are routed from the PDF to the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator and are
connected to the power terminals on the front panel of the ERAM-A Remote Aggregator.
In order to minimize interference and optimize xDSL performance, it is advisable, but
not a minimum requirement, to route cables using separate channels for signal and power
cables.
Keeping a distance of 10 cm between signal and power cables is advisable where it
imposes no practical problems.
