Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)

Lesson Idea Name: Life Science Wakelet!

Content Area/Grade Level(s): Science Grade 2

Content Standard Addressed:

S2L1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the life cycles of different living
organisms.

Technology Standard Addressed:

2. Communication and collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a
distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.

Selected Technology Tool: Wakelet

Bloom’s Taxonomy Level(s):

☒ Remembering ☒ Understanding ☒ Applying ☐ Analyzing ☐ Evaluating ☐ Creating

Levels of Technology Integration:

☒ Infusion Level: Students may work at a higher Bloom’s Level, but they do not have any “Voice or Choice”
during the activity and most of the decisions are made by the teacher.

☐ Integration Level: We would like to see ALL lessons/activities reach this level. The project is student-
driven. Students have “Voice and Choice” in the activities, selecting the topic of study and determining the
technology tool to demonstrate mastery of the standard. The teacher becomes more of a facilitator.
☐ Expansion Level: The projects created are shared outside of the classroom, publishing student work and
promoting authorship. This could be reached by showcasing the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, or publishing via an outside source.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):

When using Wakelet in this lesson plan, there is UDL implementation. There different ways of displaying life
cycles of different organisms. Students can collaborate with others as they upload a picture of their backyard
to relate the life cycles back to their home life. There are videos, pictures, and giphys offering engaging
questions and of different life cycles such a leaves, flowers, and bees.
Lesson idea implementation:
Teachers will use this lesson to introduce life cycles of different organisms to students. When using the
Wakelet they can explore and acquire the knowledge of different life cycles of organisms. The activity can be
introduced after reading a book about nature and or even after a nature walk! This lesson idea can take a day
or up to a week. A book can be read throughout the week starting Monday and then a nature walk can be
done on a Wednesday or Thursday. After the nature walk the teacher can use the Wakelet in class and ask
students to bring in their pictures from home. If available, teachers can post the link to the wakelet for
students to interact with it at home. Students will be asked to upload pictures and answer questions on the
Wakelet and then the teacher will evaluate if each student has a grasp on the concept and feedback can be
provided in class face to face by the teacher.
Beyond-the-Basic Productivity Tools (BBPT)
Reflective Practice: Student’s learning will be impacted by the differentiation of information displayed on the
Wakelet page, engagement of questions, and collaboration of students between other students. To further
enhance this activity technology tools such as Microsoft PowerPoint, Bubbl.us/ Popplet, and Edpuzzle are
great tools to reinforce student learning in different ways. A digital story, graphic organizer of thoughts, and
videos with questions are great tools for student learning.
