Module 4: Literature 1
:LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Read “ Flowers in the Crypt” by Catherine Garcia Dario, a work of
Creative Nonfiction on page 34-38 of your book. Then answer the
following questions.
1.1.How is nonfiction different from the other literary genres?
A creative nonfiction is factual. It is to write the truth in a style that is
as accurate and informative as reportage, yet as personal,
provocative, and dramatic as fiction. It encompasses texts about
factual events that are not solely for scholarly purposes. This genre of
writing incorporates techniques from fiction and poetry in order to
create accounts that read more like story than a piece of journalism
or a report.
1.2. How is creative nonfiction different from other works of
nonfiction?
Other works of nonfiction aren’t designed for entertainment or
enjoyment. Its sole purpose is to convey information, usually in a dry,
straightforward manner.Creative nonfiction, on the other hand, pays
credence to the craft of writing, often through literary devices and
storytelling techniques, which make the prose aesthetically pleasing
and bring layers of meaning to the context. It’s pleasurable to read.

2. Answer the following based on the “Flowers in the Crypt”.

2.1.Discuss grandfather’s life from his youth up to the time he got
married.
He grew up witnessing his parents fought very often. These fighting
mainly resulted from her mother engaging in an affair. He even dealt
with listening to her scream that she did not love him, and she never
did. He went to Manila to study. Where he undergone hardships just
to get through day to day life. There he learned to do vices, and also
wrote poems and sold them to his male classmates who want to
impress their prospects. He eventually became a journalist, a
.businessman, and a husband
2.2.The narrator of the story, the granddaughter of Exequiel, said
that:”it was almost inevitable that Remedios would come
along.” Why does she say this?
Upon observing the relationship between her grandparents, it was
as if she knew an affair would come along them two. It was
something she thought that was certain to happen or rather
unavoidable. She concluded that it might also be because of their

relationship of which she described as an “abrupt, passionate

romance that led their marriage to ruin”.
2.3.After her grandfather slipped into a coma , the narrator shows
that “Lolo was a shell, and so was I.”Explain why the
narrator believes this.
To be a shell means to be hollow, with nothing inside. This metaphor,
when a person is "in a shell", is all inclusive of the fact that they are
reclusive and unresponsive. This is true to the situation of both the
granddaughter and her Lolo. While her Lolo was in a vegetative state
in comatose after the stroke, she also felt numb and did not even
shed the lightest tear, not even after he slipped into a coma. They
were both passive in different ways.

Love’s not supposed to betray,

And cheating’s never okay.
It’s a couple’s worst pitfall—
For falling, be remorseful.
