Subject: APPLIED ETHICS (THC6)
Prof: Chickee Poticar

1. Why should we engage in applied ethics? What is the aim? ( 10 point)

- One reason to study ethics is that ethics is inescapable. ... The study of ethics should
also lead one to develop skills in articulating your own values, to provide others with
reasons for your actions and give you the means of questioning the values of others.
Applied ethics is a branch of ethics devoted to the treatment of moral problems,
practices, and policies in personal life, professions, technology, and government.

2. Peter Singer vs Ronald Dworkin: (20 points)

Should the applied ethicist be a judge or a moderator?

- I think for me applied ethicist should be a moderator because as a person youre not
required to judge people and also as a moderator you have the ability to make a decision
synchronized and properly done by not judging others life.

3. Are there any absolute moral norms or principles? ( 10 points)

- An absolute moral rule is a rule that states that some actions ought to be done (or ought
never to be done), no exceptions. Examples include: We should never intentionally kill
an innocent person.
There was one major philosopher who believed that moral rules are absolute. Immanuel
Kant (1724–1804) argued that lying is wrong under any circum- stances. He did not
appeal to theological considerations; he held, instead, that reason always forbids lying.
