These sheets have been prepared so that you can
assess each child’s phonic abilities for reading and
spelling.
Reading – decoding
Can children recognise each individual sound as
they scan a word from left to right, pronounce these
correctly and then blend these to read the whole
word? c + a + t = cat
Spelling – encoding
Can the child look at a picture, say the correct word,
and say and write each sound in turn for the whole
word, from left to right?
cat = c + a + t
Some of the record sheets feature two decoding
activities to promote fluency in reading.
Welcome Unit
This sheet assesses whether each child can name
each picture and then write its first sound correctly.
1 Give children individual copies of this assessment
sheet.
2 Read the rubric. Do the first two items with the
class to make sure they understand what to do.
3 Ask each child to complete the task individually.
4 Ask children to read their answers aloud to check
with the class.
*Children who cannot do this task will need extra
practice for each and every sound they have not yet
mastered.
*Check that children can say each sound correctly.
Re-teach pronunciation if necessary, using English
World Welcome Unit Audio or English World Starter
Pack.
