AMAIA ROMERO:
LIVING A DREAM
MARLENE FERNANDEZ

WHO IS SHE?
Amaia Romero Arbizu (born January 3, 1999),
also known as simply Amaia, is a Spanish
singer and pianist. She gained national
recognition after taking part in series nine of
the television talent contest Operación
Triunfo, where she'd end up first place.
Romero represented Spain alongside fellow
competitor Alfred García at the 2018
Eurovision Song Contest with "Tu Canción".

Romero debuted in television in 2009 when she

appeared on TVE's television news playing the piano
at age ten as part of a children talent contest, where
she ended third in her instrument's category.
Romero participated in the televised talent show
Cántame una canción on Telecinco, where she sang
alongside David Civera and Sergio Rivero a year
later. In 2011, she was the winner of a scholarship to
Rock Camp 2011, and participated in the camp in
2011 and 2012. In 2012, she took part in series one of
the talent show El Número Uno on Antena 3,
qualifying for the show performing The Beatles'
"Here Comes the Sun" with her ukulele. She was
eliminated in week six of the series. The jury in the
show was made up of David Bustamante, Ana
Torroja, Miguel Bosé, Natalia Jiménez and Mónica
Naranjo. Romero and Naranjo would meet again on
series nine of Operación Triunfo, as Naranjo went
on to be part of the jury. In 2012 she also met Felipe
VI and Letizia Ortiz, who would become King and
Queen consort of Spain. They both told Amaia that
she "had a future" after they saw her perform in
Pamplona with the Pablo Sarasate Orchestra.
O.T.
In July 2017, Amaia auditioned in Bilbao for
series nine of the reality television music
competition Operación Triunfo, a program
that was returning to television after a six-
year hiatus. On October 23, 2017, she was
selected to enter the show's "Academy" on
the season premiere: Amaia performed
David Bowie's "Starman" and was not
selected originally by the show's jury, but
she was saved by the Academy's staff of
teachers. In January 2018, Amaia became a
finalist in the competition after being
awarded a perfect score of 40 points from
the jury – the highest score in the history of
the competition –. On February 5, she was
proclaimed the winner of the series with
46% of the final votes from the public. After
her win, she signed a record deal with
Universal Music.

Additionally, due to being one of the final

five finalists on Operación Triunfo, Amaia
was a candidate to represent Spain in the
Eurovision Song Contest 2018. For the
special Eurovision selection show that was
held on January 29, 2018, she was
allocated three songs: "Camina", which she
performed as part of a group made up of
the five finalists; "Al cantar", composed by
Rozalén, which she performed solo; and
"Tu canción", composed by Raul Gómez
and Sylvia Santoro, which she sang in a
duet with her then boyfriend Alfred
García. The latter was selected with 43% of
the public vote to represent Spain in the
2018 Contest in Lisbon, Portugal. Amaia
and Alfred were the second to perform at
the Eurovision final, held on 12 May 2018.
They placed twenty-third out of the 26
participating countries with 61 points: 43
from the professional juries and 18 from
the televote.

THE HISTORY ABOUT

BRAWLSTARS

FOUR YEARS EVOLUTION

Games like Brawl Stars don’t just arrive
fully formed. It has taken four years of
constant evolution to get to this point;
indeed, it was once a fantasy game, then it
became a sci-fi laserfest, then most
recently a gunslinging western.
Today, it retains plenty of that wild west
feel, but its chaotic shootouts are more
cheerful and cartoony than any of its
previous incarnations.

JON FRANZAS
Jon Franzas was there right at the game’s very
beginnings. He recalls that, despite four years
of refinement and them. Jon Franzas started
working on what became Brawl Stars back in
2014.
“I think the very first version was like a
deathmatch, battle royale-type game,” Franzas
tells us. “We quickly realized that playing with
friends was so strong that we shifted it
towards a three-versus-three game.”
THE POTENTIAL OF THE GAME
PROTOTYPE
But even with its rough-and-ready look, Franzas and
Brawl Stars’ earliest prototype was that early team felt the game had potential. A more
actually a fantasy-style game—purely solid setting was needed. Briefly, the team discussed
because developer Supercell’s artists placing it in the same universe as Clash of Clans and
knew the style well and could make Clash Royale, but they ultimately landed on creating an
placeholder visuals quickly. entirely new gameworld. Brawl Stars’ playstyle has
remained remarkably intact.

The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II is an

American family of single-seat, single-engine, all-
weather stealth multirole combat aircraft that is
intended to perform both air superiority and strike
missions. It is also able to provide electronic
warfare and intelligence, surveillance, and
reconnaissance capabilities. Lockheed Martin is
the prime F-35 contractor, with principal partners
Northrop Grumman and BAE Systems. The
aircraft has three main variants: the conventional
takeoff and landing F-35A (CTOL), the short take-
off and vertical-landing F-35B (STOVL), and the
carrier-based F-35C (CV/CATOBAR).

The Northrop F-5 is a family of supersonic

light fighter aircraft initially designed as a
privately funded project in the late 1950s by
Northrop Corporation. There are two main
models, the original F-5A and F-5B Freedom
Fighter variants and the extensively updated
F-5E and F-5F Tiger II variants. The design
team wrapped a small, highly aerodynamic
fighter around two compact and high-thrust
General Electric J85 engines, focusing on
performance and a low cost of maintenance.
F-5, WINNER OF THE INTERNATIONAL FIGHTER AIRCRAFT COMPETITION
After winning the International Fighter Aircraft Competition, a program aimed at providing
effective low-cost fighters to American allies, in 1970 Northrop introduced the second-
generation F-5E Tiger II in 1972. This upgrade included more powerful engines, larger fuel
capacity, greater wing area and improved leading edge extensions for better turn rates,
optional air-to-air refueling, and improved avionics including air-to-air radar. Primarily used
by American allies, it remains in US service to support training exercises. It has served in a
wide array of roles, being able to perform both air and ground attack duties; the type was
used extensively in the Vietnam War. A total of 1,400 Tiger IIs were built before production
ended in 1987. More than 3,800 F-5s and the closely related T-38 advanced trainer aircraft
were produced in Hawthorne, California. The F-5N/F variants are in service with the United
States Navy and United States Marine Corps as adversary trainers. Approximately 500
aircraft were in service as of 2014.

JOINT STRIKE FIGHTER PROGRAM, A WIN FOR F-35

The aircraft descends from the Lockheed Martin X-35, which in 2001 beat the Boeing X-32 to win the
Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. Its development is principally funded by the United States, with
additional funding from program partner countries from NATO and close U.S. allies, including the
United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, the Netherlands, and formerly Turkey.
Several other countries have ordered, or are considering ordering, the aircraft. The program has
drawn much scrutiny and criticism for its unprecedented size, complexity, ballooning costs, and
much-delayed deliveries, with numerous technical flaws still being corrected. The acquisition strategy
of concurrent production of the aircraft while it was still in development and testing led to expensive
design changes and retrofits.

A BRIEF HISTORY
OF POKEMON
MATEO ENCISO PÉREZ
When it comes to Pokémon, you are either completely aware
of it and have been following the games, the anime, the
movies, the trading cards and everything else, or are
completely bewildered by the Pokémon mania that’s
gripping the Internet right now. Regardless of which camp
you are in, sit back, grab your beverage of choice and relax—
we are going to take a trip back in time to the very
beginning of Pokémon.

POCKET MONSTERS
Pokémon is short for “Pocket Monsters",
the original Japanese name. The franchise
has its roots in a gaming magazine in the
early 1980s in Japan—Game Freak, started
by Satoshi Tajiri and Ken Sugimori. Tajiri
was the writer, while Sugimori was the
illustrator.

VIDEOGAMES
They soon realized that the arcade scene
at the time wasn’t too hot anymore and
decided to develop games themselves.
This included games that were published
by Nintendo on the NES and Game Boy
like Yoshi and even games for SEGA like
Magical Tarurūto-kun on the Mega Drive,
SEGA’s console. In its time as a developer,
Game Freak had its titles published by the
likes of even Sony back then.
DEBUT
26 February 1996 marks the debut of the
Pokémon franchise in the form of both
those games on the Game Boy in Japan. At
its heart, Pocket Monsters: Red and Green
was a very basic Japanese role-playing
game. You play as a Pokémon trainer
travelling the world and collecting the
ubiquitous little monsters (inspired by
Tajiri’s childhood love for insect
collection) and training them in battles
with other Pokémon.

CATCH ´EM ALL

You start out with a single Pokémon (you get
to pick one of three) and one aim is to “Catch
‘em all". To get all 151 Pokémon, however, you
had to trade with other players. Pokémon Red
and Pokémon Green were different versions,
as it were, and each had a few Pokémon
exclusive to it. Players could use Nintendo’s
Game Boy link cable to, well, link up and
trade Pokémon, as well as engage in battles
with each other.

BATTLES
The turn-based Pokémon battles were the
other major aspect of the game. Playing The
Final Fantasy Legend on the Game Boy had
showed Tajiri that the system could take
more than just action games—there was a
place for role-playing games too. And so, in
Red and Green, you also travel to different
Pokémon gyms and battle the gym leaders
to win badges, a process that gets more
challenging as you go along. In the end, you
get to face-off against the best Pokémon
trainers in the land, and also defeat an evil
mega-corporation (Most Japanese role-
playing games in the genre end up having
the same basic plot, really).
