MANAGEMENT ACCORDING TO HENRI FAYOL. 1. DIVISION
OF WORK 2.AUTHORITY AND RESPONSIBILITY 3.DISCIPLINE
4.UNITY OF COMMAND 5.UNITY OF DIRECTION
6.SUBORDINATION OF INDIVIDUAL INTEREST TO THE
GENERAL INTEREST 7.REMUNERATION OF PERSONNEL
8.CENTRALISATION 9.SCALAR CHAIN 10.ORDER
The aim of this assignment is to discuss the ten principles of management according to Henri
Fayol. Fayol coined the ten principles of management which are Division of work, Authority and
responsibility, Discipline, Unity of command, Unity of direction, Subordinate of individual
interest to the general interest, Remuneration of personnel, Centralization, Scalar chain and
Order. The very first principle that Fayol lists in the 10 Principles is the division of work. He
believed that work should be divided among groups or individuals in order to ensure that there
was special focus on each part of a job. This principle states that every work should be divided
into the smallest possible part and each such part is to be performed by an individual person
(laborer). Instead of assigning the whole work to an individual, it's better to assign one task to
one person. The division of work is the course of tasks assigned to, and completed by, a group of
workers in order to increase efficiency. Division of work, which is also known as division of
labor, is the breaking down of a job so as to have a number of different tasks that make up the
whole. Fayol (2020) reiterated that, Authority must be equal to Responsibility. He argued that,
there should be a balance between Authority (Power) and Responsibility (Duties). If the
authority is more than responsibility then chances are that a manager may misuse it. If
responsibility is more than authority then he may feel frustrated. The authority has the power to
give orders and instructions to its subordinates that they may work. Responsibility means duties
entrusted to a person at the time of delegation of authority. Authority may be delegated.
Responsibility cannot be delegated. A superior can always share his authority with his
subordinate.1 Dec 2020

According to Fayol (2012), Discipline means sincerity, obedience, respect of authority &
observance of rules and regulations of the enterprise. This principle applies that subordinate
should respect their superiors and obey their order. It is an important requisite for smooth
running of the enterprise.

Unity of Command is one of the ten principles of Management developed by Fayol. This
principle states that there must be only one superior to a subordinate. That is, an employee or a
worker must not have many bosses or superiors. Under the principles of war, unity of command
means that all the forces fall under one responsible commander. It requires a single commander
with the requisite authority to direct all forces in pursuit of a unified purpose. Simply put, it
means one mission, one boss.
Fayol (2011) argued that, Subordination of Individual Interests to General Interest any
individual's interest that conflicts with an organizational interest must be subordinated to the
interests of the organization. The organization must find ways to reconcile the tension between
individual and organizational interests.

Fayol (2019), defines Remuneration as a job interview that one gets to interview him/her during
a job interview such as what hours one will work? How many days will one work? Is it what
your job title will be? It's more than likely you'll be thinking this one: 'How much will one get
paid?' Those questions are exactly what remuneration is all about. According to the Merriam-
Webster dictionary, the word remunerates means 'to pay an equivalent for a service, loss or
expense.' If remunerate means to pay someone, then remuneration means the pay that you
receive for a service. We all know that pay is one of the deciding factors when choosing whether
or not to accept an offer of employment, but how do we decide what is fair pay? Fortunately for
us, the guiding principle for deciding this was established many years ago.

Centralization – Balancing centralized decision making (from the top) with letting employees
make decisions. Or as Fayol wrote, "A place for everyone and everyone in his place." Scalar
Chain – Employees should know where they stand in the organization's hierarchy and who to
speak to within a chain of command. Centralization refers to the process in which activities
involving planning and decision-making within an organization. Depending on a company's
goals and the industry are concentrated to a specific leader. ... Leadership plays an important
function in management or location. Fayol believed in constant communication between
supervisors and employees. Fayol defines the scalar chain as the chain of supervisors ranging
from the ultimate authority to the lowest rank. An employee should feel free to contact his
supervisor about anything through the scalar chain.12 Feb 2019The scalar chain was developed
by Henri Fayol. ... Scalar chain is the chain of all supervisors from the top management to the
person working in the lowest rank. Scale chain identifies the path along which communication
has to flow in order for the communication to be effective in an organization.

Fayol defines the order principle as the systematic, orderly and proper arrangement of people,
places and things. In his explanation of the concept of order, Fayol felt that there was no perfect
order to anything, but that any form of disorder was unacceptable, (Fayol, 2016)
