Personal statement:

I have decided to apply for medicine because of my growing interest in understanding the human
anatomy and the science behind human behaviour. growing up in a household where metal health
was never really understood because. I believe that this is because of the stigma around mental
health and the different perceptions of mental health in different cultures. I saw how it impacted
people’s day do day life in such a negative way which made me determined to change this in order
to improve the quality of life for others because I now know how it can limit the progress of people’s
life. I believe that it is important to share understanding of mental health and after a lot of research
and speaking to medical professionals around me, I finally concluded that I want to study psychiatry.

biology is essential to understand the biological processes that occur, and chemistry aids in the
mathematic side of studying medicine because you learn how to work out concentrations of
different substances and understand how compounds are formed which can be applied to the
medical workplace. this is essential to knowing how much medication is needed and what conditions
in needs to be stored at which is vital for a patient’s health as wrong prescription can potentially
lead to death. Lastly, I decided to do psychology for several reasons. Aside from the fact that I have a
passion for the subject, I have always been mesmerised by human behaviour and always wondered
why people act in a certain way. Because I aspire to be a psychiatrist, I understand that being able to
comprehend the human brain is important, but I believe it is also important to know that someone’s
environment can also impact their mental health and can lead them behaving in a certain way.

I have taken time to research day to day life working in the medical field I have come to find out
that determination, time management, teamwork and communication are some of the key skills that
are important if you wish to take up a role a hospital. As a result, I have made it my priority to
improve these skills. one example was when I decided to join a scheme in my school called coach
bright where you had to teach a pupil in a younger year a subject that they were struggling with. it
tested my communication and organisation skills as I had to ensure I had the work planned out for
each lesson and that I was constantly finding different ways for the pupil to understand the topic we
were covering. Opportunities like this are important because I have now developed skills that I didn’t
know were important which makes more confident for this course.
