WHAT’S MORE
Activity 1. Cardiovascular Conditioning

Cardiovascular conditioning improves circulation and strengthens the heart, lungs and
blood vessels. It builds endurance and strength for the heart muscle. Moreover, exercise
conditions the heart to work more efficiently. Twenty (20) aerobics practitioners
recorded the average time (in minutes) of their individual workout. The data are listed
as follows:
70 72 68 73 43 40 45 40 74 54
80 50 82 50 65 35 62 30 30 55

a.) Arrange the given data from lowest to highest

Data:
30 30 35 40 40 43 45 50 50 54 55 62 65 68 70 72 73 74 80
82
UPPER QUARTILE
Solution:
k (n+ 1)
Qk =
4
3(20+1) 3(21) 63
Q3 = = = 4 = 15.75 ≈ 16
4 4
Q3 = 72 (16th data)
Interpretation:
Since the upper quartile is the 16th data then Upper Quartile/Q3=72. Therefore, 75% of
the data distribution fall below 72.
LOWER QUARTILE
k (n+ 1)
Qk =
4
1(20+1) 21
Q1 = = 4 = 5.25 ≈ 5
4
Q3 = 40 (5th data)
Interpretation:
Since the lower quartile is the 5 th data then Lower Quartile/Q1=40. Therefore, 25% of the
data distribution fall below 40.

Activity 2: Time to Record

2nd DECILE
Solution:
k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10
2(15+1) 2(16) 32
D2 = = = 10 = 3.2 ≈ 3
10 10
D2 = 15 (3rd data)
Interpretation:
Since D2 is the 3rd data then 2nd Decile/D2=15. Therefore, this implies that 20% of the data
distribution fall below 15.

6th DECILE
Solution:
k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10
6(15+1) 6(16) 96
D6 = = = 10 = 9.6 ≈ 10
10 10
D6 = 25 (10th data)
Interpretation:
Since D6 is the 10th data then 6th Decile/D6=20. Therefore, this implies that 60% of the data
distribution fall below 25.
8th DECILE
Solution:
k (n+ 1)
Dk =
10
8(15+1) 8(16) 128
D8 = = = 10 = 12.8 ≈ 13
10 10
D8 = 30 (13th data)
Interpretation:
Since D8 is the 13th data then 8th Decile/D8=30. Therefore, this implies that 80% of the data
distribution fall below 30.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED

QUARTILE DECILE
Definition: Definition:
These are the score points which divide Deciles are the nine score points that
a distribution into four equal parts. divide a distribution into ten equal
parts.

Formula: Formula:
k (n+ 1) k (n+ 1)
Qk = Dk =
4 10
where: where:
n = total number of data n = total number of data
k = position of the quartile k = position of the decile

STEPS IN SOLVING WORD PROBLEM INVOLVING QUARTILE AND DECILE

Step 1: Arrange the n data entries from lowest to highest.

Step 2: Solve for the position of the quartile or decile using the correct formula.
Step 3: Interpret the result.

WHAT I CAN DO
1. How do decile scores differ from quartile scores?
- Deciles are the nine score points in which divide a distribution into ten equal parts
while Quartiles are the score points which divide the distribution into four equal parts.

2. Are quartiles and deciles useful when applied in a real-life situation?

Yes, quartiles and deciles are useful when applied in real-life situations like
standardized exams, income distribution and in investments.
