Overall, the iReady assessment results placed Dave at a grade level 1 overall. These
results suggest that Dave did not acquire fundamental decoding skills and will need explicit
instruction in phonics. The gaps in grade level knowledge will need to be addressed by intensive
compare and contrast within a text, sequence events, and retell literary text. Next steps we will
need to take is continuing to learn how to analyze story elements, learn to ask questions about
key ideas and details, and continue to deepen the skill of making inferences.
I chose to follow up with iReady as our post test to compare Dave’s results to his initial
iReady scores. When looking at the results of the pre compared to the post test there are several
areas of improvement. In the domain of phonics he went from a grade K to testing out
completely. In the domain of vocabulary he went from a grade 2 to grade 3. In the domain of

comprehension specifically literature he increased from a grade level 1 to a grade level 2. In the
domain of comprehension; informational text, Dave increased two grade levels to a third grade
placement.
Dave is a hardworking student who loves to learn and is motivated to do well in school.
Dave is on his way to developing proficiency with informational text skills such as:
demonstrating understanding of key ideas and details, retelling the most important ideas, using
the text to locate information, and comparing and contrasting information between two texts. In
order to help him continue on his path to developing grade level proficiency I have included a
understanding of the main idea, after reading a short text, have Dave state a one sentence
summary of what he just read. Another recommendation is to help him understand how to use

evidence to support inferences (a conclusion based on evidence and reasoning) in text. Evidence
to support inferences is not limited to the written word in the text but can include illustrations or
his own prior knowledge to support his inference. Lastly, I would recommend encouraging Dave
to use a variety of strategies when trying to determine the meaning of an unfamiliar word. Some
strategies to help Dave identify a word he does not know may include: guessing the meaning of
the word, searching for context clues, breaking the word apart- look for clues in the base word,
prefix, etc., and using a dictionary to look up the word if needed. I believe by further
encouraging Dave to keep reading while reminding him of these strategies will help to achieve
