Vermont’s Deer Wintering Area Mapping is Updated, Improved
Vermont’s deer wintering areas are cru-
cial to the survival of deer, especially dur-
ing extended cold weather and deep snow.
Knowing the location of these areas is
essential in planning for their conserva-
tion and management.
“The Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Department is pleased to announce that it
has updated and improved the mapping of
deer winter areas for the entire state using
sophisticated Geographic Information
System (GIS) technology and aerial pho-
tography,” said Everett Marshall, the
department’s database biologist.
Deer wintering areas make up nearly
nine percent of Vermont and provide criti-
cal habitat for the survival of white-tailed
deer, which are near the northern edge of
their range. Deer have adapted to deep
snow and cold conditions by seeking areas
of dense softwood cover, such as hem-
lock, balsam fir, red spruce, and white
pine. The tree canopy in these areas limits
snow depths, making movement easier
and providing protection from cold
winds.
Vermont’s original deer wintering area
mapping was completed in the 1970s and
early 1980s and was based on aerial pho-
tography and field visits by state wildlife biologists. The deer
wintering areas were drawn on topographic maps and based on
small scale aerial photos.
The enhanced scale of the aerial photos and GIS’ ability to
overlay mapped data have greatly improved the quality and accu-
racy of the mapping. For instance, the maps no longer include
non-forested habitats and address the effects of residential devel-
opment.
“These new maps will aid private landowners and public land

2010 Was Safest on Record for Vermont Hunters
Vermont hunters enjoyed tremendous success
last year, judging from the deer, turkey and bear
harvests, but it was another number -- a record
low number -- that should make our sportsmen
and women most proud. 2010 was the safest
year on record for Vermont hunters.
Only two relatively minor hunting-related
shootings occurred in 2010, a figure that’s even
more impressive when compared to the millions
of hours the state’s 80,000 licensed hunters
spent in the field.
“Vermont’s hunters should be very proud,”
said Christopher Saunders, Hunter Education
Coordinator. “This marks the eighth year in the
past decade that the state recorded five or fewer
hunting-related shootings. The statistics show
that hunting is a very safe activity.”
“Our goal is to always have zero incidents,”
said Saunders. “Both of the 2010 incidents were
self-inflicted, both were caused by careless han-
dling, and, most importantly, both were prevent-
able.”

I’ve Passed Hunter Education, Now What Can I Do?
This is a question that faces most youth after
successfully passing a Hunter Education Safety
class. Waiting for the next opportunity to get out
into the woods can be difficult, but it also can be
a good time to practice and expand skills. The
Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department, partnering
with The Friends of the National Rifle Association
and the Vermont Bearhound Association, has an
answer – the NRA Youth Hunter Education
Challenge.
The NRA Youth Hunter Education Challenge
is a free, daylong event, for youth to practice
their skills in firearms, archery and land naviga-
tion. Open to all youth under 19 years of age,

The deer wintering area maps are available from Vermont
Center for Geographic Information (www.vcgi.org) as a GIS layer,
or they can be viewed online through the Vermont Agency of
Natural Resources Atlas (http://maps.anr.state.vt.us/ANRA) Maps

Wildlife Department District Office

cation instructors. Close to 5,000 people learn
how to handle firearms safely each year in
Vermont hunter education courses.
Mandatory hunter education has led to a 75
percent decline in the hunting injury rate in
Vermont over the past three decades. The
Vermont Hunter Education program is always
looking for experienced hunters to pass on the
safe and responsible tradition of regulated hunt-

Vermont Public Television’s “Outdoor Journal” will broadcast a
live forum Thursday, April 14, at 8pm on the goals and challenges
of managing deer and moose. The program will also be webcast
live at www.vpt.org.
Outdoorsman and writer Lawrence Pyne will host, and guests
will be Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry; Mark
Scott, state wildlife director; and Cedric Alexander, state moose
project leader. VPT will take calls from viewers at 1-866-424-
LIVE during the show and welcomes questions ahead of time or
during the program at connect@vpt.org.
All questions and comments, whether or not they are used dur-
ing the program, will be given to Vermont Fish and Wildlife
Department staff.

n Heading into Texas last weekend Kevin Harvick might well
have earned the nickname of “the Closer”. Harvick is indeed the
man when the checkered is eminent and has used two end-of-race
passes for the lead to capture consecutive victories- the second
time he has won back-to-back races in his career (September 2006
was the first). Looking at NASCAR’s Loop Data, Harvick ranks
second in Closer statics, which tallies positions gained and lost in
the last 10% of races. He has gained 22 spots this season, second
only to Juan Pablo Montoya’s 31.
n I was looking over the Texas winners list and it’s all big names.
Texas has seen 16 different winners in the Sprint Cup Series. 14
of those winners have made it to at least one Chase for the Sprint
Cup. Only two Texas race winners haven’t earned a Chase berth,
Terry Labonte and Dale Jarrett but both won Sprint Cup champion-
ships (Labonte in 1984,’96; Jarrett in 1999) prior to the Chase’s in-
ception in 2004. 7 Texas race winners have won the series champi-
onship: Kurt Busch, Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Matt Kenseth,
Tony Stewart, Jarrett and Labonte.

n Over 40 teams have filed entry for this Sunday’s New Hamp-
shire Governor’s Cup race at Lee USA Speedway, including de-
fending Governor’s Cup champion, Miles Chipman who stunned
the American Canadian Tour Regulars with an impressive win a
year ago. Entries have rolled in from former NASCAR Busch East
drivers, Mike Bruno and Tom Carey Jr. Three former Lee regulars
JR Baril, Jeffrey Labreque Jr. and Katrina Canney are also sched-
uled to join the fray. Rookie driver Kyle DeSouza and 2010 Devil’s
Bowl champion Hunter Bates from Pittsford, VT have also filed
entries along with another youngster Daniel Khilall a seasoned
quarter midget driver from Jersey City, NJ who will get his first
taste ACT racing. Teams from Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut,
New York as well as Vermont and Quebec could make this opening
race the most diverse mix of racers ever for an opening event.
n Cup teams head for Talladega Superspeedway for the 42nd run-
ning of the Aaron’s 499 on Sunday, April 17, (FOX 1:00 p.m.)
Brad Keselowski is the defending race champion while Juan Pablo
Montoya is the defending pole sitter. Dale Earnhardt has the most
wins at Talladega with 10. He also leads with the most top-fives
(23) and the most top-10’s (27). Bill Elliott’s May 1985 victory
was one of the most miraculous comebacks in NASCAR history.
Elliott from a 5-mile deficit without the aid of a caution flag or
today’s “Lucky Dog Award” free pass won the Winston 500 at Tal-
ladega. A broken oil fitting had knocked Elliott nearly two laps off
the pace early in the race.
