10.1 Look at the film review and do the exercises to improve your writing
skills.
Review of: End Game, Avengers.
In this movie, “End Game,” the Avengers come together to defeat Thanos once and for all.

After half of the universe was destroyed, the avengers tried to find a solution, but for that
they need the help of Ant-Man. He gave them the clue to travel in time and so collect the
different gems of infinity to restore the universe.

In my opinion this movie gives us a final tribute to the entire saga such as when Capitan
America raises the hammer of Thor and Hulk and Iron Man carry the gauntlet of infinity.
They also created the greatest crossover of the entire history and made the audience feel
connected to the movie to the point of making one feel as if he was there in person.

The only thing I didn’t like in the movie is that they did not include some main characters
and focuses on others that are secondary to the plot, but apart from that it was the best
movie I ever saw in my life. I really enjoyed it and I hope they continue to produce more
movies like this.

TESTING MY KNOWLEDGE.
1. VOCABULARY: Insert the following words in the sentence where they best fit.

director - screen - movie stars - scene - genres - plot

1. The opening showed a young man leaving prison and

walking to a bus stop.
2. It was a good film, but the was difficult to follow at times.

3. The gets really angry when actors forget their lines.

4. earn millions of dollars every time they play a role.

5. Do you like sitting far or close to the ?

6. For a film class we had to compare movies from two different ,

such as comedy and horror.

2. READING: Film Jargon.

Movies can be divided into several different genres. There are exciting action movies with
gun fights and car chases, and horror movies that make us jump in our seats. There are
comedies that make us laugh, and dramas that make us cry. Sci-fi movies show us what
the future might be like, historical films tell us stories from the past, and documentaries
show us real people and events.

After watching a movie, you might want to ask questions like:

“Which character did you like the best?”
“What did you think of the plot?”
“Did you like the cast?”
“What was your favorite scene?”

The movie industry has its own jargon. Some of the words that are used are: cast,
character, director, scene, take, plot and screen. Obviously these do not include the
equipment that is needed for shooting a film. The cast refers to all the actors and actresses
in a movie or TV show. Film actors try hard to get a main character in a movie.

The actors who play the main parts in a movie do not only get millions of dollars, but may
also become movie stars. A director is the person who is ultimately in charge of making a
movie. Although a film can run for ninety minutes, but to shoot it might need a year or even
more. Sometimes one single scene needs to be shot fifty times, before the director is
happy!

What is paradoxical is that sometimes a film with a very good plot does not receive the
number of Oscars awards as a film that doesn’t have a plot at all, but is only full of action,
many-a-times violent action. People love different genres of movies and this means that
every year, everyone can enjoy a number of movies that he or she likes most.

10. TEXT PRODUCTION.

Transition words are used more frequently in the English language than we probably
realize and even though their name suggests they may be a complex subject, in
reality, transition words are quite easy to understand.

Transition words in sequence.

When you write you need to use transition words to connect ideas together.
Sequence: First, then, next, thus, after that, therefore, in conclusion,
lastly, to conclude, additionally, consequently and finally.

Example: First, sedimentary rocks were formed when sediment sifted

down under water. Next, more sediment covered the earlier
sediment and put pressure on the earlier sediment. Also, the
amount of water on top of the sediment might have increased.
Additionally its weight put even more pressure on the
sediment. Consequently, over millions of year, the sediment
became rock. Finally, the rock was thrust up so that we can see
its layers today in places like the Grand Canyon.

4. GRAMMAR: Future Perfect vs Future Perfect Continuous.

Future Perfect
Form: Will + have + past form of a verb.
The past form of a verb is usually verb+ed, except in the case of irregular verbs, which
may have other past forms. (Will have given, will have slept, will have finished, etc…)

Use future perfect when you want to say that an action will be completed at a specific
time in the future.

Example: He will have slept for five hours when his alarm clock goes off at 5am.
The next time you see me, I will have finished my summer courses.
In America, a president will have ruled for eight years by the time he finishes
his second term and must leave office.

Future Perfect Continuous

Form: Will + have been + verb + ing.
(Will have been thinking, will have been driving, etc..)
Use future perfect continuous to predict that an action will still be in progress at a specific
time in the future. You must also describe how long the action will have taken at that point
in the future.

Example: He will have been sleeping for five hours by 5am, and he’ll probably keep
sleeping until at least 7am.
The next time you see me, I will have been taking my summer courses for
a few weeks.
In America, a president will have been ruling for four years by the time he
gets elected to a second term.
