PHY101: Mechanics
PART- A
1. Three equal masses each of mass 3 kg are situated at vertices of an equilateral triangle of
side 3√3 m. (i) Find moment of inertia of system about an axis passing through CM of system
perpendicular to plane of lamina. (ii) If system is pivoted at any of the vertices and rotates
freely about the pivot, what is angular momentum of system if it makes one complete
revolution in 5 sec?

2. Two children, each of mass 10kg, sit on opposite ends of a narrow board with length 10m
and mass 10 kg. The board is pivoted at its centre and is free to rotate in horizontal circle.
What is the rotational inertia of system about a vertical axis through centre of board? What is
direction and magnitude of angular momentum of system if it rotates clockwise with angular
speed of π rad s-1? While system is in rotation, children pull themselves toward the centre of
board until they are half as far as from centre as before; find final angular speed of the
system.

3. A hollow cylinder, solid sphere and disc of same radius, ω and mass roll down an inclined
plane with angle of inclination θ and height h. (i) Find rotational kinetic energy of each of
them about an axis passing through their centre. (ii) Velocity at the foot of inclined plane (iii)
Total mechanical energy just before they touch the ground. (iv) Arrange answers obtained in
(i), (ii) and (iii) in ascending order (v) Ratio of translational energy to rotational energy in
each case.
PART- B
4. A uniform solid disk and uniform hoop are placed side by side at the top of an incline of
height h. If they are released from rest and roll without slipping. Determine their speeds when
they reach bottom. Which object reaches the bottom first?

5. A 4.oo kg mass is attached to a light cord that is wound around a pulley as shown in fig.
the pulley is a uniform solid cylinder with a radius of 8.00cm and a mass of 2.00 kg (a) what
is net torque on the system about point O? (B) when the mass has speed v , the pulley has an
angular speed w =v/R . Determine the total angular momentum of the system about O. (c)
Using the fact that τ=dL/dt and your results from part (b) ,calculate the acceleration of the
mass .Will the 4.00 kg mass move if wheel become too massive ?

6. Consider two cylinders having different masses mi and m2 connected by a string passing
over a pulley as shown in fig. the pulley has a radius R and moment of inertia I about axis of
rotation. The string does not slip on the pulley and the system is released from rest. find the
linear speeds of the cylinder after cylinder 2 descends through a distance h , and the angular
speed of the pulley at this time
