1. Introduction

GZ Consulting Engineers have been engaged to assess the feasibility of making structural alterations and its
implications on the bearing pressure of footings throughout the site.
The purpose of this assessment was to perform a detailed load takedown analysis of the existing and
proposed structures via finite element modelling to compare the greatest footing pressures of the proposed
alterations to the maximum allowable bearing pressure of 200 KPA.

2. Existing Structure Description

The existing building is a single-story structure with a roof terrace, comprised of masonry and concrete
construction.
The external masonry walls are double brick and supported on raft footings on a ‘’’’‘sand???”’’’’’’ foundation
with a maximum capacity of 200 KPA. The roof terrace slab is 200mm thick and is supported by the double
brick masonry brick walls below and a series of upturn concrete beams.
The 200mm thick roof slab supports a series of both lightweight and masonry balustrades over.

3. Proposed Structure Description

The proposed structure is a 2-story residential structure which utilizes existing ground walls and 200mm
terrace slab. Existing lightweight and masonry balustrades and concrete upturn beams will be left in place.
The terrace slab will now be utilized as a first-floor slab structure which supports a new timber floor and tiled
washroom.

The new first floor walls and roof structure are comprised of light-weight construction. The walls will mainly be
lined with mini orb cladding and timber widows with 23mm thick glazing.

4. Determination of Footing Pressures – Load Takedown Analysis.

A detailed load takedown analysis was performed through finite element modelling of both the existing and
proposed structures to determine whether the structural alterations would have implications on the bearing
pressure of the footings.

Using load case SLS(Q) – G + 0.7Q, the greatest point load and uniformly distributed load were found
throughout the structure, located at the top of footings and resolved via stress distribution to find a bearing
pressure on the soil below the corresponding loads. These locations are shown in figure 5.

Figure 5: Greatest point and uniformly distributed loads..

Appendix A shows detailed calculations to find the maximum bearing pressures by resolving the loads shown
above using the existing footing arrangements.
It can be shown that the greatest bearing pressure on the soil of the proposed structure is 144 KPA. This much
less than the maximum allowable bearing pressure of 200 KPA.
Similarly, it also shows the greatest bearing pressure on the soil of the existing structure to be 128 KPA.
This gives an increase of 12.5% on the maximum bearing pressure found in the structure, however still has a
factor of safety (F.O.S) of 1.39.

5. Conclusion

Although there is an increase in dead load from the additional first floor walls and roof, these loads are offset
by a large reduction of live load (previously on the terrace) by 5%. This leads to only a small increase in
bearing pressure on the footings.

Overall, there is no significant increase in bearing pressure which could cause foundation movement.

I trust that the above is sufficient information for your needs, however do not hesitate to contact the
