PE 4 TEAM SPORTS
MODULE 1
(Week 2-3)

INTRODUCTION
A team sport includes any sport where individuals are organized into opposing teams which
compete to win. Team members act together towards a shared objective. This can be done in a number
of ways such as outscoring the opposing team. Team members set goals, make decisions, communicate,
manage conflict, and solve problems in a supportive, trusting atmosphere in order to accomplish their
objectives.
Participation in team sport has the potential to provide youth with opportunities to develop a
range of competencies including social skills, which can contribute to an array of positive outcomes
throughout one’s life. For example, team sport can provide an avenue for adolescents to learn how to
work well with other members of their team—a skill that is likely to be of use to nearly all individuals at
some point in their lives.

BASKETBALL
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BASKETBALLS
James Naismith – a Canadian-American physical education
instructor who invented Basketball in December 21, 1891.
He wanted to create a game of skills for the students instead
of one that relied solely on strength. He wanted a game that
could be played indoors in a relatively small space. The
objective of the game is to throw the ball into the peach
baskets.
1892- The first formal rules were devised.

1893- Iron hoops and hammock-style basket were introduced.
Tony Hinkle – he designed the current orange ball JAMES
that is in use today. NAISMITH

It was introduced in the 1950’s so that the players

and spectators would be able to see it more it
clearly.

NATURE OF THE GAME

 Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball
through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground.
 The game is played on a rectangular floor called the court, and there is a hoop at each end.
 The court is made into two main sections by the mid-court line, it has ten seconds to get the
ball over the mid-court line. If it doesn’t, then the defense gets the ball.
 The team with the ball is called the offense, the team without the ball is called the defense.
They try to steal the ball, contest shots, steal and deflect passes, and garner rebounds.
 Each team will have an assigned basket or goal To defend. This means that the other basket
is their scoring basket. At halftime, the teams switch courts/goals.
 The game begins with one player from either team at the center court. A referee will toss
the ball between the two. The player who that gets his hands on the ball will tip it to a
teammate. It is called a Tip-off.
 In addition to stealing the ball from an opposing player, there are other ways for a team to
get the ball. One such way is if the other commits a foul or violation.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

 1936 – Men’s Basketball first appeared in Berlin Games

 1976 - Women’s Basketball was introduces at Montreal
 1992 – First game was played by professional players in the Barcelona Games
 April 9, 1975 – PBA’s first game was played at the Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines.

WARM-UP
It is very important to warm up before engaging fully into the activity. This is because the
muscles of the body is more elastic and durable once it is heated rather than they are
immediately intense work. This makes the muscles more resistant to injury. Warmed up
muscles can react to changes quickly, such as contracting and relaxing when needed, thus
overall performance of the body is enhanced.
