Chapter I
Introduction
Background of the Study
Malnutrition is an imbalance in micro and macronutrients —either a deficit or surplus of them—
which impedes the body’s capability of growing and staying healthy. As mentioned in previous
articles, malnutrition can be caused by several different factors, which include but are not limited
to disease, lack of access to safe drinking water, eating disorders, mental health illnesses, and
even climate change. With such a wide range of causes, it is expected that the effects of
malnutrition are just as varied. Keep reading for more information on the effects of malnutrition
on the human body and overall health.
Statistically, children who are low-for-age or constantly experience weight loss are affected in
the long term, namely by not reaching their optimum size and physical capacity as adults. Also,
malnourished kids make sickly men and the illness also affects their mental capacity, with
undernourished children typically having lower IQs than their well-fed counterparts.
Furthermore, acute malnutrition is the biggest contributor to under-five mortality. This is caused
two of the effects of malnutrition: susceptibility to infections and a slow recovery from illness.
Finally, undernourished mothers not only give birth to undernourished children, but are at a
higher risk of perishing during or after the birth. Malnutrition causes issues such as obstructed
labor and postpartum hemorrhage, with anemia –one of the effects of malnutrition— in mothers
being linked to increase mortality at labor.
There is a statistically significant relationship between health and academic achievement.
Research evidence shows that children who are healthy are at a low risk for school problems than
students who are unhealthy. Students with good health tend to perform better in school than
those with poor health. Problems that emanate from poor health include a higher probability of
school failure, poor levels of concentration, grade retention and dropout. However, health is a
complex and elusive concept and its definition is often shrouded by assumptions and limitations.
Therefore, the relationship between health and student achievement is often complex. The
concept of health has been evolving over time, cutting across multiple disciplines. Of late, there
has been a focus on achieving not only health but total well-being. Schools have been challenged
to promote student health by providing favorable environments, policies, support services and
information-based interventions. Schools should develop integrated health interventions because
of their proven effectiveness in promoting healthy lifestyles among students. This chapter
critically examines the concept of health and establishes the connection between health and
achievement. The chapter also proposes health interventions that are effective in influencing
academic achievement.
As we all nowadays technology is part of our life. Without technology, the world will be on
nightmare. The world is developing because of new technology and advance gadgets to use. It
makes the world smaller than we thought. Gadgets offer many advantages to the student:
Independent on learning things, More learning opportunities, Self-motivation, Communication,
etc. However, it has not only positive effects on students but also the negative effects of gadgets
on students. Negative effects come all from the excessive use or misuse of gadgets or
technology. The overuse of devices or children addicted to technology/gadgets like tablets,
laptops, computers, smartphones, video games, etc. may reduce student’s self-motivation, ability,
and interest in learning. It’s unsafe for a student who uses gadgets more than limits. Gadgets that
make children/students stable in one place like video games, smartphones, etc. Parents also
found an easy way by giving them gadgets to use and make stable in one place
In this age of electronic messaging, Facebook and Instagram, no student, it seems, is without
an electronic gadget. Even elementary pupils have either a cellphone or a tablet. And they are
loath to leave these at home.
Cellphones and other mobile devices are helpful for they are also sources of information and
entertainment. But these should not be allowed in schools because they will certainly distract
students. The covert or overt use of gadgets are often the reason why students do not take down
notes, do not listen to lectures and thus, perform poorly in school.

Statement of the Problem

This are the questions needed to be answered in order to conduct this study successfully:
1. Does gadgets affects the health of students?
2. Does too much studying affect students health?
3. Does being a health deficient of student affects his/her school performance?

Hypotheses
This is the hypotheses that are needed to be proven to conduct this study successfully:
There is no significant difference between the effects of malnutrition in today's youth as
perceived by the selected intermediate to grade 10 students in Victorious Christian Montessori
College Alfonso Inc. S.y. 2021-2022.

Objectives
This study aims to:
1. Determine if gadgets affects the health of students.
2. Determine if too much studying affect students health.
3. Determine if being a health deficient of student affects his/her school performance.
Significance of the Study
This study will benefit the following individuals:
• Students – This study helps the students to know the negative effects of being malnutrition to
their school performance.
• Parents – This study will help the parents to take care of their child especially when it comes
to the health of their child.
• Future Researcher – This study is beneficial to the future researcher. They can easily
understand this study and use this to their own research.

Scope and Limitations

This study will determine if there’s an effects of malnutrition in today's youth as perceived by
the selected intermediate to grade 10 students in Victorious Christian Montessori Alfonso
College Inc. S.Y. 2021-2022.

Definition of terms
To fully understand the study, the researcher have selected and defined several terms.
Youth- the one who is experiencing malnutrion.
Malnutrion- is the condition that develops when the body is deprived of vitamins, minerals and
other nutrients it needs to maintain healthy tissues and organ function.
