Project Name: Centre Pompidou-Metz, Paris,

France
Project Type: Modern Contemporary Art Museum
Year: 2010
Height: 77 m
Area: 11330 m²
PEOPLE Architect: Shigeru Ban Architects
Architecture Influence: Bilbao effect
SPACIALLY BUILT AS TOURIST ATTRACTION

This is a museum of modern and contemporary art

and a branch of Centre Pompidou of Paris in Metz.
Main purpouse of the annex is to show large art
work displays.

PROCESS TECHNOLOGY It possesses three rectangular galleries (Gallery 1,

2, and 3) weaving through the building at different
levels, jutting out through the roof with huge picture
windows angled towards landmarks such as the
Saint-Stephen Gothic cathedral, the Imperial rail-
way station and, the Arsenal Concert Hall.

Architect Shigeru Ban used ‘Bilbao effect’ as he Views from Galleries

was influenced by Sir Frank O. Gehry’s Guggen-
heim Museum in Bilbao, Spain.

PROCESS

The concept of the roof structure of this building is inspired by a Chinese hat that is made of
Bamboo strips by using a wicker craft technique. Here, the architect used digital technology in
Chinese Hat such a way that structure gets a fusion of crafts and technology.

The undulating laminated timber roof structure surrounds a 77-meter metal spire and, the frame
is covered with a translucent fiberglass and Teflon textile canopy and overhangs the building’s
walls by up to 20 meters.

TECHNOLOGY
This undulating timber roof is designed by
using advanced BIM modeling software
(for analyzing load capacity and tensile
strength of the structure). The timber
beams measure 14 x 44 centimeters in
cross-section,18,000 linear meters of ma-
terial is individually CNC-fabricated. After
this modeling and CNC process, assem-
bly of these kits of parts makes one mod-
ule. By continuing this assembly process,
it makes building component which is
prelaminated undulated timber roof.
