Reading Strategies
Purpose of reading
People read different kind of text for different
reason.
Some purposes for reading might be
- To scan for specific info
- To skin to get an overview of the text
- To relate new content to existing knowledge
- To write something
- To critique an argument
- To learn something
- For general comprehension
READING
- Process of getting meaning from the book and
bringing meaning into it , getting meaning
from the means knowing the authors point of
view and merging with this readers point of
view to make the whole treading material
understandable
A GOOD READING DIET MUST CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING
ACADEMIC OR PROFESSIONAL READINGS – 50%
(SCHOOL TEXT, PERIODICALS AND JOURNALS FOR
ACADEMIC FULFILLMENT)
RECREATIONAL READINGS – 20%
(FICTION OR NON FICTION FOR PERSONAL
EMPLOYMENT)
Before reading
- Speculate about the author’s purpose for
writing
- Review what you already know and what to
learn about the topic
- Preview the text to get overview of its
structure , looking at headings figures,
glossary
- Predict the contents of the text and pose
questions about it, if the authors have
provided question read them and write them on
note taking
- Note any discussion question

Abridge – detailed dictionary, legit work,
complete pronouncation
unaBridge – definition of terms only
DURING READING
- Check your prediction and find answers to
posed questions
- Use headlings and transition word to
idnetidfy relationship in the text
- Create a vocabulary list of other unfamiliar
words to define later
- Try to inter unfamiliar words meaning by
identify
- Connect the text to what u already know about
the topic
- Take break (split the text into segments if
necessary)
Main idea – thesis statement
Denotation – literal meaning
Connotation – personal meaning
AFTER READING
Summarize the txt in your own words
- Talk to someone about the author’s idea to
check your comprehension
- Identify and reread the diff parts of the
text
- Define words on your vocabulary list and
practice using them
