Values Education - Grade 9 In His goodness, God created us free human persons, set

LECTURE – 2nd Quarter apart from the rest of creation, yet charged with
responsibility over it. Because we are made in the image of
PARTS OF THE ROSARY God, who freely choose to share His goodness with us, we are
called to “DO THE GOOD.”

WHAT IS FREEDOM?
• Being truly free means growing in our capacity to act
RESPONSIBLY.
– Following the commandments of God.

AM I FREE?
• There are some, however, who want to make their
human freedom ABSOLUTE, while there are others,
more CYNICAL, who say that we are not free at all.
• As we grow up, we naturally gain more experience
and more responsibilities. Because of this, some
people are strongly tempted to think that their
freedom ought to be LIMITLESS. They feel that they
should be able to do whatever they want even if it
destroys the true freedom of others.

It is the universal moral law grounded on our human nature
TRUE FREEDOM IS DOING THE GOOD and knowable through human reason.

WHAT CONSCIENCE IS NOT?
Misconception 1: CIVIL LAW
CONSCIENCE IS INDIVIDUALISTIC Human made in order to bind all citizens of a nation.
- Doing things “MY WAY” without considering the good of
others.

Misconception 2:
CONSCIENCE IS GOD’S VOICE WITHIN US
- Means sometimes our conscience can mistakenly judge
something objectively evil to be good or something
objectively good to be evil.

Misconception 3:
CONSCIENCE IS OUR FEELING OF GUILT
Ex.- “nakakakonsensya ang ginawa ko.”

Misconception 4:
MEDIA’S DEPICTION OF CONSCIENCE AS AN EXTERNAL
REALITY IS ACCURTE
Ex.- Angel and Devil on my shoulders.

CONSCIENCE MORALLY OBLIGES US

All persons have a conscience. We all have the human
capacity to use our reason
(1) to discern and judge the moral goodness or evil of a
particular act (2) with the feeling of being morally obliged to
do what is good and what is evil (CFC 723).

With this understanding of conscience, we realize that as

persons, we are called not only to judge what is morally good
but also “TO DO THE RIGHT AND LOVE GOODNESS” (Mi 6:8).
