Course Profile
Semester 1, 2021-2022 – HNUE
I. General Course Information:
- Course Title: Reading-Writing 1
- Semester: Semester 1, 2021-2022
- Level: A2 – A2+
- Location: HNUE
- Contact hours per week: 3 hours
- Assumed Background: Reading-Writing 1 is a compulsory courses for the students whose first major at university is not English
but aim to reach the level of B2 of English Proficiency according to the Common European Framework (CEFR) after the whole
university course. Leaners are assumed to be at level A2 of English Language Proficiency to be eligible and adequate for the
course.
- Course Description: This course is designed to boost students’ English language proficiency from A2 level to A2+ according to
Common European Framework of Reference.
II. Learning Objectives: After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

- understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar, everyday subjects, provided there is an oppotuniry to get
repetition or clarification sometimes.
- understand the main points in straightforward texts on subjects of personal interest
- write about a variety of familiar subjects well enough for others to follow one’s story or argument.
- Write different types of sentences properly

GRADUATE ATTRIBUTE OBJECTIVES


In terms of Reading: 1
o Use telephone directories and other reference books to find what I want and understand the most important pieces of information,
for example price, size, power.
o Understand the main points in short newspaper/magazine stories, especially when they are illustrated.
o Understand instructions expressed in simple language
o Understand short everyday stories about familiar subjects if the text is written using simple language.
o Understand simple texts, emails and letters from friends or colleagues
In terms of Writing: 2
o write very short, basic descriptions of past activities and personal experiences, for example a recent holiday. Write a short
description of an event.
o Write short letters or emails, making arrangements or giving reasons for changing them, telling about everyday things to people
one knows well.
o Write about everyday or familiar topics.
o Understand and write different types of sentences (simple, complex, compound, mix sentences) properly
In term of Grammar: 3
o get a basic understanding about a part of English grammar system (verb tenses, adverbs of frequency, quantifiers…)
o produce written texts and spoken conversations using appropriate grammar.

2. Assessment details:
Attendance: Students are required to attend more than 80% of the total class hours. If students do not, they cannot take the end-
of-term test.
On-going assessment (30%)
A. Writing Assignments:
- Type: In-class and At home
- Learning objective assessed: 2,3
- Due date: Assignment Writing will likely take place every week
- Task description: Students will write the first draft of the assignment at home and then the next writing session would be spent editing
and checking the writing for the second draft.
B. Midterm Test: Reading-Writing
- Type: During class
- Learning objective assessed: 1,2,3
- Due date: Week 8
- Time allowed: up to 1 hour/ each
- Task description: Students will answer questions assigned by the examiner.
C. Homework Fulfilment: Teachers randomly check students' homework. Any failure to complete 100% of the assissgned
homework (as in the course outline) would be considered as mark ‘zero’ for that week’s ongoing assessment.
End-of-term Test: Reading-Writing 1
V. Course Policies
- Students who fail to attend at least 80% are not eligible to sit the final exam.
- Coming late (10 minutes after class time) twice is equal an absence.
- Items (for which no extension has been granted) submitted after the due date and time, incur a late submission penalty. The
penalty is at the rate of 2 marks (per day) of the total available marks for that particular piece of assessment.
- Requests for the granting of extensions must be made in writing (not via email) to the lecturers at least 24 hours prior to the
submission date. The request must also contain documentation satisfactorily supporting the request. If an extension is
approved, the new agreed date for submission will be noted.
