Optimization of GFRP reinforcement in

Subway and Railway segments.

Composite materials have been used for over 20 years as temporary
reinforcement in concrete structures, using cut-able GFRP reinforcement as
a replacement of conventional steel rebars. Since 1996, this solution has
become a standard concept in the design of shafts and subway stations,
and has proven to be the solution, a major evolution in reinforced concrete
technology.

Railroad Stations Russia

The technology of reinforced concrete is facing a serious degradation
problem in structures due to the corrosion of steel rebar. Traditional steel
reinforcement can cause expensive problems both in terms of logistics and
in length of service life. Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) and has
proven to be the solution, a major evolution in reinforced concrete
technology.

Rio De Janiero Metro Line 4

The Rio de Janeiro Line 4 is a subway line. It is part elevated and part
underground (2 segments). The line has been planned to open for the 2016
Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics.

Doha Metro Rail – Phase 1

Doha Metro Phase 1 is Qatar’s mega infrastructure project of three metro
lines with a total length of 164 km. The first phase involves the construction
of red, green and gold lines and their major stations. Composite materials
have been used for over 20 years as temporary reinforcement in concrete
structures, when used as temporary tie-backs, CFRP material is offering the
most advanced technical solution thanks to its superior properties in
tensile, creep and durability, while the GFRP Anchors offers a cost-effective
solution without technical compromise. GFRP anchors can advantageously
replace steel removable anchors to prevent encroachment of neighboring
plots. This is why nowadays, GFRP anchors account for more than 90% of
the FRP anchors installed in the region

Singapore Circle Line – Stage 6

The Circle Line (CCL) is an underground Mass Rapid Transit line in

Singapore. The 35-km, 30-station line runs from Dhoby Ghaut and Marina
Bay in the Central Area to HarbourFront in the south. Moreover, 3,000m of
Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) rebars, that can boast some key
benefits with respect to metal rebars: a lighter weight, no risk of corrosion,
and a lower susceptibility to attract lightning strikes.

Delhi Metro Phase 3

The Delhi Metro is the largest and busiest rapid transit system in India,
serving Delhi and its satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon,
Noida, Bahadurgarh and Ballabhgarh. It operates over 2,700 trips daily.
Thanks to the cuttable nature of GFRP (glass fiber reinforced polymer) bars,
TBMs can get in or out of shafts/stations in few minutes. Furthermore, 450
sets of active anchors were applied to retain walls during the excavation
work. The anchors are also made of GFRP, hence the tendons can be
excavated by any standard equipment, and no anchor removal is required.
