DATE: 22/09/2021
SUBJECT: PHYSICAL SCIENCE
TOPIC: DISPERSION OF WHITE LIGHT BY A GLASS PRISM
DURATION: 40 minutes
LEVEL: CLASS X
PERIOD: 4th PERIOD

GENERAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will be able to acquire scientific knowledge.
2. Students will be able to gain knowledge about light and its phenomena.
3. Students will be able to develop interest towards physical science.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES:
Students will be able to:
1. Explain the phenomenon of dispersion.
2. Explain how light travel through prism.
3. Acknowledge the components of white light.
4. Explain how rainbow are formed.
METHOD: LECTURE CUM DEMONSTRATION
TLM/TEACHING AIDS: SLIDES (VIDEO/PICTURE)
PREVIOUS KNOWLEDGE: RELECTION AND REFRACTION OF LIGHT
STATEMENT OF THE TOPIC: THE TEACHER ANNOUNCES THE TOPIC OF

INTRODUCTION What is reflection and refraction? Reflection is the reverting Show picture

waves in the same
medium, when it falls on
plane. While, Refraction is
the shift in direction of the
waves, when it enters
medium with different
density.

equal to angle of

b. The incident ray, the
reflected ray and the
normal ray at the point

Consider a triangular glass prism. It

has two triangular bases and three
rectangular lateral surfaces. These
surfaces are inclined to each other.
The angle between its two lateral
faces is called the angle of the
prism.

shower. It is caused by dispersion
of sunlight by tiny water droplets,
present in the atmosphere.

The water droplets act like small

prisms. They refract and disperse
the incident sunlight, then reflect it
internally, and finally refract it
again when it comes out of the
raindrop.
EVALUATION:
1. Who was the first to observe spectrum of sunlight?
2. What do you mean by dispersion?
3. How many components are there in white light?
4. How does rainbow form?

SUMMARY:
 The phenomenon of splitting of white light into seven colours when it passes through a
glass prism is called dispersion of white light.
 The band of the coloured components of a light beam is called its spectrum.
 Different colours of light bend through different angles with respect to the incident ray,
as they pass through a prism. The red light bends the least while the violet the most.
 Sunlight is made up of seven colours namely, violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange
and red (VIBGYOR).
 Any light that gives a spectrum similar to that of a sunlight is often referred to as white
light.
