Caring for the Environment

Sub topic: Biodiversity

Biodiversity is the variety and variability of life on Earth. Biodiversity is typically a measure of

variation at the genetic, species, and ecosystem level. Terrestrial biodiversity is usually greater

near the equator, which is the result of the warm climate and high primary

productivity. Biodiversity is not distributed evenly on Earth, and is richest in the tropics.

The biodiversity of the living things across the earth can be negatively influenced by habitat loss

or habitat degradation. These may be due to the actions of the human population which causes

climate change among other things.

The human population is provided with many of its basic needs for survival from biodiversity.

We need food that is shelter.

Ecosystems

An ecosystem is an environment of plants and animals. It entails the relationships between:

1. Plants and animals

2. Animals and animals

3. Plants and plants

4. Animals and the non-living environment

5. Plants and the non- living environment

6. Plants, animals and the non-living environment

What is the
NICHE of a
living thing???

Responses:
A food web and a food chain are two ways that the relationship between plants, animals and the
environment can be seen.

1. Use the diagram of the terrestrial food wed to make examples of food chains

2. Utilize the feeding relationships seen to explain the flow of energy in the ecosystem

3. Explain the likely outcomes in a situation if there were to be too many of a particular

animal in the environment or if a particular animal in the environment were to be extinct.

(use the food web as the environment.

4. What is a trophic level?
