GREETING & OPENING PRAYER Rev. Carness Vaughan

OPENING VOLUNTARY My Jesus, I Love Thee arr. Linda McKechnie

(with J.S. Bach’s “Sleepers, Awake”)
Scott Montgomery, organ & Frode Gundersen, piano

* CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 92:1-2) Dr. Steve Pulliam

Pastor: It is good to praise the Lord
and make music to your name, O Most High,
People: proclaiming your love in the morning
and your faithfulness at night.

* OPENING HYMN 88 Maker in Whom We Live DIADEMATA

(Verses 1, 2 & 4)
1. Maker, in whom we live, in whom we are and move,
the glory, pow’r, and praise receive for thy creating love.
Let all the angel throng give thanks to God on high,
while earth repeats the joyful song and echoes to the sky.
2. Incarnate Deity, let all the ransomed race
render in thanks their lives to thee for thy redeeming grace.
The grace to sinners showed ye heavenly choirs proclaim,
and cry, “Salvation to our God, salvation to the Lamb!”
4. Eternal, Triune God, let all the hosts above,
let all on earth below record and dwell upon thy love.
When heaven and earth are fled before thy glorious face,
sing all the saints thy love hath made thine everlasting praise.

* AFFIRMATION OF FAITH (A Statement of Faith of the United Church of Canada)

We are not alone, we live in God’s world. We believe in God:
who has created and is creating, who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh,
to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God.
We are called to be the church: to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others,
to seek and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope.
In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God.

* GLORIA PATRI 70 MEINEKE

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost.
As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION Dr. Steve Pulliam

Christ our Lord invites to his table all who love him,
who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.
Therefore, let us confess our sin before God and one another.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION AND PARDON
Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo.
Forgive what our lips tremble to name, what our hearts can no longer bear,
and what has become for us a consuming fire of judgement. Set us free from a past
that we cannot change; open to us a future in which we can be changed;
and grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image;
through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen.
Pastor: Hear the good news:
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners; that proves God’s love toward us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven!
People: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: Glory to God. Amen.

SCRIPTURE LESSON Exodus 20:1-17

And God spoke all these words:
“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other
gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on
the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I,
the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and
fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me
and keep my commandments. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God, for the Lord will not
hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a sabbath to the Lord your God.
On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your male or female servant,
nor your animals, nor any foreigner residing in your towns. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and
the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the
Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the
land the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not
steal. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house.
You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that
belongs to your neighbor.”

SERMON “THE STORY” Rev. Carness Vaughan

New Commands and a New Covenant

* GREAT THANKSGIVING
The Lord be with you. And also with you. Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise.
The pastor gives thanks, remembering God’s acts of salvation, and concludes:
And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven,
We praise your name and join their unending hymn:
The pastor continues the thanksgiving and concludes:
And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ,
we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice,
in union with Christ’s offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith:

The pastor invokes the present work of the Holy Spirit and then praises the Trinity, concluding:
All honor is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever:

RECEIVING THE BREAD AND CUP

RECEIVING PRAYER & INVITATION TO CHRISTIAN DISCIPLESHIP

* CLOSING HYMN 117 O God, Our Help in Ages Past ST. ANNE
(Verses 1-3, 5 & 6)
1. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast, and our eternal home!
2. Under the shadow of thy throne, still may we dwell secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone, and our defense is sure.
3. Before the hills in order stood, or earth received her frame,
from everlasting, thou art God, to endless years the same.

5. Time, like an ever rolling stream, bears all who breathe away;
they fly forgotten, as a dream dies at the opening day.
6. O God, our help in ages past, our hope for years to come;
be thou our guide while life shall last, and our eternal home.
