Proposed Study/Title

Level of Satisfaction in Online Learning Experienced by Civil Engineering Students of Father

Saturnino Urios University, A.Y. 2020-2021

1. Theory Title:

Cognitive Load Theory

Theorist/s or Proponents

Atkinson, R.C. 1968, et.al.; (Leppink et al., 2015)_

Theory Statement:

They stressed out that in Cognitive Load Theory, learning is the gradual development of
cognitive schemas. Additionally, the sum of the intrinsic and extraneous cognitive load constitutes
the total cognitive load and needs to operate within the narrow limits of working memory.

They further added that the extraneous cognitive load which does not contribute to
learning like schema should be incorporated with a design learning materials and instruction
around them such that this ineffective cognitive load is minimized.

Relationship of the Theory to the Present Study:

This theory has relevance to the present study for it tackles the cognitive loads that the
students could absorb and learn and the cognitive loads which they cannot. Hence, this can be
linked to finding out the satisfaction rate being encountered by the civil engineering students. For
with it, it can be determined if the students are learning well or not learning well in the new mode
of learning --- online learning. With that, learning materials design will be employed to minimize
ineffective learning.

2. Theory Title:

Happy-productive” student theory
Theorist/s or Proponents

(Cotton, et.,al. 2002)

Theory Statement:

It suggests that student satisfaction is mediated by psycho-social factors such as coping,

stress, and well-being. Also, it offers evidence wherein high levels of psychological distress at
university are related to lower satisfaction.

Relationship of the Theory to the Present Study:

This theory has relevance to the present study for it emphasizes that there were factors
affecting the satisfaction level of the students. In the case of this study, the level of satisfaction of
the participants will be based on their experience with online learning. Most particularly in the
areas of grades, teacher-student relationship, access to Neo Learning Management System, and
school activities involvement.
