I. Gather the height (in inches) of 15 male and 15 female classmates.

II. Tally the result

5’11-6’1 1 182.9 182.9 -2 -2 179.8 15
i = 5.1(cm) 15 2567.8 -7

III. Create a histogram of the height

IV. Compute the Measures of Central Tendency (Mean, Median, Mode) of the two groups (male
and Female)
Female
Mean using Class Marks = 2324/15 = 154.93cm
Mean using Coded Deviation = 160+(10/15) * 5.08 = 163.39cm
Median = 149.4+(7.5-2/6) * 5.08 = 185.81cm
Mode = 157+(7-6/ (7-6)) * 5.08 = 162.08cm
Male
Mean using Class Marks = 2567.8/15 = 171.19cm
Mean using Coded Deviation = 167.6+(-7/15) * 5.08 = 165.23cm
Median = 172.2+(7.5-9/5) * 5.08 =201.16cm
Mode = 164.6+(9/(9-5)) * 5.08 = 176.03cm
V. Compute the Variance, Standard Deviation and Coefficient of Variation (use sample) of the
two groups (male and Female)
Female

x f 𝑥𝑚 𝑓𝑥𝑚 𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅ (𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅)2 𝑓(𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅)2

4'8-4'10 2 144.80 289.60 (10.13) 102.62 205.23
4'11-5'1 6 152.40 914.40 (2.53) 6.40 38.41
5'2-5'4 7 160.00 1,120.00 5.07 25.70 179.93
15 2,324.00 423.57

Standard Variance = √423.57/15= 5.31cm

Standard Deviation = √423.57/15-1= 5.22cm
Coefficient of Variance = 5.22/154.93 = 0.0337

Male

x f 𝑥𝑚 𝑓𝑥𝑚 𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅ (𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅)2 𝑓(𝑥𝑚 − 𝑥̅)2

5'5-5'7 9 167.6 1,508.40 12.67 160.53 1,444.76
5'8-5'10 5 175.3 876.50 20.37 414.94 2,074.68
5'11-6'1 1 182.9 182.90 27.97 782.32 782.32
15 2,324.00 4,301.77

Male
Standard Variance = √4301.77/15= 16.93cm
Standard Deviation = √4301.77/15-1= 16.91cm
Coefficient of Variance = 16.91/154.93 = 0.0988

VI. Make a conclusion based from the computed results of IV and V

The mean of female is 60.99 in. and 67.40 in. for male. The median for female is 73.15 in. and
79.2 in. for male. The mode of female is 63.81 in. and 69.3 in. for male. Base from the result in
Problem V the male group is more dispersed than the female group.
VII. Convert to 𝑧 − 𝑠𝑐𝑜𝑟𝑒 and use the areas under the normal curve table to answer the following:
a. What percent (male and female) of your classmates are shorter than 5 feet?
Female z = 152.4-154.93/5.22 = 0.48467

Male z = 152.4-171.19/16.91 = -1.11118

b. What percent (male and female) of your classmates are taller than 5 feet?

Female z = 152.4-154.93/5.22 = 0.48467

Male z = 152.4-171.19/16.91 = -1.11118

b. What percent (male and female) of your classmates are shorter than 6 feet?

Female z = 182.88-154.93/5.22 = 5.35441

Male z = 182.88-171.19/16.91 = 0.69131

c. What percent (male and female) of your classmates are between 60 inches and
70 inches?
Female z = 152.4-154.93/5.22 = 0.48467
z = 152.4-154.93/5.22 = 4.38123

Male z = 152.4-171.19/16.91 = -1.11118

z = 152.4-171.19/16.91 = .39089

VII. At 0.05 level of significance, test the hypothesis that your male classmates are taller than your
female classmates. (apply the steps in testing the hypothesis)
Female - One-tailed the t-value is 0. The value of p is .5.
Two-tailed the t-value is 0. The value of p is 1.
Male - One-tailed the t-value is 1.753369. The value of p is .058814.
Two-tailed the t-value is 1.753369. The value of p is .117628.

Conclusion: Based from the analyzed data, male is taller than female
