COMMUNICATIVE COMPETENCE STRATEGIES IN VARIOUS SPEECH


SITUATION

TYPES OF SPEECH CONTEXT

INTRAPERSONAL - This refers to communication that centers on one person where the
speaker acts both as the sender and the receiver of the message.

INTERPERSONAL - This refers to communication between and among people and establishes
personal relationships between them.

THREE TYPES OF INTERPERSONAL COMMUNICATIVE

DYAD COMMUNICATION - The term 'Dyadic communication', in general refers to an


interaction between two persons. Even if two persons are present in a situation, it is only two
communicators that play a fundamental role. It is a person to person transaction and one of the
commonest forms of speech communications

SMALL GROUP - Communication that involves at least three but not more than twelve people
engaging in a face to face interaction to achieve a desired goal. In this type of communication,
all participants can freely share ideas in a loose and open discussion.

PUBLIC - Communication that requires you to deliver or send the message before or in front of
a group. The message can be driven by informational or persuasive purposes.

MASS COMMUNICATION - Communication that takes place through television, radio,


newspaper, magazine, books, billboards, internet, and  other types of media.

TYPES OF SPEECH STYLES


According to Joos (1968), there are five speech styles. Each style dictates what appropriate
language,  vocabulary should be used or observed.

CASUAL - A casual speech style is used in relaxed or informal conversations between or


among friends, peers, colleagues, or family who share a common knowledge or interest. Thus,
the participants may use group language, so only members of the group can understand it.

CONSULTATIVE - A conversational style in which the speaker constantly observes the


listener's verbal and nonverbal cues for feedback. – What the speaker will say next depends on
the feedback provided by the listener.

FORMAL - Formal style is a broad term for speech or writing marked by an impersonal,
objective, and precise use of language. A formal prose style is typically used in orations,
scholarly books and articles, technical reports, research papers, and legal documents.

FROZEN - Frozen speech style is usually used in formal settings. It is the most formal style of
communication wherein the audience is not allowed to raise questions to the speaker. It is a
style of communication that almost never changes. It has a fixed and static language and uses
long sentences with good command of grammar.
