Module 1
Contemporary Arts
Introduction
The arts are described as means of expression that require imagination and/or skill in making
aesthetic objects or encounters that can be shared with other people. These objects are experiences that
may exhibit what is in the imagination of the artist or creator. These may also portray ideas and
emotions. These may also be used to entertain or persuade other people. These aesthetic objects and
encounters create beauty. The arts include visual arts, architecture, literature, music, dance, theater, and
cinema or film.
However, during the 1970’s up to the present, artist began combining different art forms and
media. An artist may now combne two visual art forms, such as painting and sculpture. An artist may
also integrate two or more different art forms, such as sculpture and music. Integrating two or more
forms of performing arts is still common nowadays, even though that performing arts are already
integrated before the 1970’s.
The term “visual arts” encompasses a wide range of forms created by Filipinos. It ranges from
Western-influenced visual art forms to works created by folk and indigenous people. Traditionally,
these visual art forms include painting, sculpture, and architecture. However, there are other functional
visual art forms in the country that need to be appreciated as well. Some of these forms include

TOPIC 4
The Filipino Artists’ Role to Contemporary Arts
Introduction
“In every work of art, the artist himself is present.”- Christian Morgenstery
Artist- one who professes and practices an imaginative art. Because of these people and creative
imagination, we have beautiful paintings, exquisite sculptures, breathtaking dance performances and
many more. Art wouldn’t existed without them.
In the past, the artist’s role was well defined and that is to create something that ulifted the spirit,
something aethetically, pleasing and entertaining. And as for today’s artists,, their role are very crucial.
Their role is four-fold or four times as great because it’s not only about aesthetic class but it has
something to do now with the Personal, Social, Physical and Immaterial.

THE PERSONAL. The artist expresses what he or she feels. Before,

the main focus of the art work is the beautiful sceneries, this time the
most important that the artist consider when starting his/her art work
is what he/she feels. It could either be a positive or negative emotion.
The important here is it should be real or authentic feelings he/she
have before doing the artwork.

THE SOCIAL. The artist expresses what he/she sees around

him/her. Everything around him/her not just the beautiful
nature or the plant and its colorful flowers, nor even the
mountain or ocean but everything around him/her including
the pressing issues that people are facing today, the calamities,
the governement and their political practices, the effects of
poverty and many more. Society is now included in the
process of making an artwork.
THE PHYSICAL. The artist finds a need to create something
not only pleasing to look at but something useful as well. The
artists in the present time is considered as practical, they make
sure that he/she will got benefits from the artworks they make.
The functionality of the artwork will be evident because ats
should not be for displayed or for exhibit but should have
essence or fuctions in our everyday life.

THE IMMATERIAL. The artist gives forms to the immaterial, the hidden
truth of the universe, and the spiritual force that inhabits the world. This is the
ultimate role of the artists today, social realism, the creative people are the
real eye-opener for all of us on the current issues thru their meaningful and
mind blowing artworks.

22 | P a g e
CONTEMPORARY ARTS ustarirhicamae@gmail.com
Through these four, the artists are able to refine and elevate our sense of what is beautiful and is
not.
These are the roles of the Filipino contemporary artists;
1. The Filipino artist gives his opinion about the culture of his time. They influenced their audience by
expressing their opinion, point of views, thoughts using their work of arts.
2. The Filipino artist is a crusader, attempting to sway the viewer to his/her side.
3. The Filipino artist has become a social critic. This is the mlost interesting role of the artists today,
because there are brave artist who showed the real status of the country using their arts, issues about
inequality of life, the effects of urbanization, corruption on the government and many more.
4. The Filipino artist has also become arts advocate for what he/she believes in.
5. The Filipino artist is versatile. Artist create not only to realize their personal fulfillments but also
share their inner talents that illuminate our capabilities as a nation.

The Filipino Artists and their Contribution to Contemporary Arts
Introduction
Before the Philippine Contemporary Art Era, there are only a few notable women were able to
find access into the world of arts because it was believed that man dominated the world of art eversince
the beginning of history but despite of that for some women to showcase their talents in arts.
During the Modern arts period or the decades before the contemporary period we have Anita
Magsaysay Ho, Nena Sagil both painters and we also have Purita Kalaw Ledesma who was the founder
of Art Association of the Philippines. But now, Filipino artists have become visible because of the
initials steps made by some strong women like Imelda Cajipe-Endaya, Brenda V. Fajardo and Ofelia
Gelvezon- Tequi, they are among those women who paved the way for others to assert their own
identity and contribute to social realism.

Imelda Cajipe-Endaya is a print maker, painter and installation

artist. She is also a curator and an art project coordinator, she is
also one of the authors of some books that tackles about arts and
became a co-founder of Kasibulan a group of artists in the
country.

Brenda V. Fajardo She’s just one of the women in the

present society who was presented as a Multi Awarded
Artist. She was known for her art works that she based in
Philippine folklore, legends and mythology where she relates
these into contemporary life and most of her works are
interned with ink.

Ofelia Gelvezon- Tequi. She finished both her degrees in Fine
Arts and English from the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Her works eminent her deep understanding in the various
disciplines including literature, art history and visual arts which
are also considered to be part of the Contemporary period.

Because of these three individuals, other Filipinas, soon followed

like Ligaya Fernando Amil Bangsa, one of the considered model
in historical recorder and conservationist. She is an advocate of
the indegenous arts of the South and because of her exhausted
efforts in promoting these Southern arts.

And now in the country, artists are appreciated and recognized with highest award given by the
President of the country. Artists who had made a mark for development of the Philippine society and
have made significant contributions in their own fields. These Filipino artists are included in the Order
of National Artists. This award is established by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 1001 s. 1972
during the time of President Ferdinand Marcos. Its vision is to give appropriate recognition and prestige
to Filipinos who have distinguished themselves and made outstanding contributions to Philippine Arts
and Letters. This is the highest award that a Filipino Artist can get for it is being conferred by the

The National Artists of the Philippines: ARCHITECTURE
Introduction

The history and culture of the Philippines are reflected in its architectural heritage, in the
dwellings of its various peoples, in churches and mosques, and in the buildings that have risen in
response to the demands of progress and the aspirations of the people.

Architecture in the Philippines today is the result of a natural growth enriched with the absorption
of varied influences. It developed from the pre-colonial influences of our neighboring Malay brothers,
continuing on to the Spanish colonial period, the American Commonwealth period, and the modern

43 | P a g e
CONTEMPORARY ARTS ustarirhicamae@gmail.com
contemporary times. As a result, the Philippines has become an architectural melting pot– uniquely
Filipino with a tinge of the occidental.

The Philippine’s architectural landscape is a contrast among small traditional huts built of wood,
bamboo, nipa, grass, and other native materials; the massive Spanish colonial churches, convents and
fortifications, with their heavy “earthquake baroque” style; the American mission style architecture as
well as the buildings of commerce with their modern 20th century styles; and today’s contemporary,
albeit “modern mundane” concrete structures of the cities.

Here are some of the National Artists for Architecture in the Philippines.

1. Pablo S. Antonio (Confered: 1976)

His works are simple and functional. Most of his designs

used clean and smooth lines. Antonio’s forms maximized the use of
natural light and cross ventilation. Some of his famous works
includes the Far Eastern University Administration and Science
Buildings, Manila Polo Club, Ideal Theater and a lot more.

2. Leandro V. Locsin (Confered: 1990)

He is the visionary behind the majestic structure, Palace of the

Sultan of Brunei which has a floor area of almost 2.2 million square feet.
He also has changed the city with his distinguishing architecture reflective
of Philippine art and culture. Locsin has produced 75 residences and 88
buildings, which include 11 churches and chapels, 23 public buildings, 48
commercial buildings, six major hotels and an airport terminal building.

3. Juan F. Nakpil (Confered: 1973)

He had a strong faith in the Filipino architect, espousing architecture

reflective of Philippine trditions and culture. He designed the 1937
International Eucharistic Congress altar and reconstructed the Quiapo Church
in 1930.

4. Ildefonso P. Santos (Confered: 2006)

Ildefonso Paez Santos, is one of the most recognized

landscape architects in the country. His first contribution in the
industry can be found in the busy streets of Makati Commercial
Center, the concept of outdoor shopping with landscaped walks,
fountains, and sculptures as accents is the product of his clever
ideas.

5. Jose Maria Zaragoza (Confered: 2014)

He is the country’s 82nd licensed architect. The National

TOPIC 1
Techniques and Performance Practices Applied to Contemporary Arts
Introduction

48 | P a g e
CONTEMPORARY ARTS ustarirhicamae@gmail.com
Contemporary art is often looked at with a skeptical eye. The truth about contemporary art is
that it uses techniques that most people aren’t quite used to, causing that skepticism to come into play.
However, these techniques are actually quite difficult and all deserve our credit. It’s an incredible feat to
create a piece of contemporary art, especially using these techniques. They challenge the mind and offer
unique perspectives in a way that art has never been able to do before. For that reason, they’re some of
the most valuable techniques that a person can experience through artwork

Here are three techniques that are among the most relevant in contemporary art today.

1. MINIMALISM

One of the artistic movements that has been most relevant throughout the contemporary art
movement is minimalism. Minimalism seeks to take away what’s unnecessary and leaving only what’s
essential. Minimalism is incredibly difficult and has even made its way into being a huge part of
branding and design for companies all over the world. This is probably the most important part of
contemporary art, as it has informed so much of society. Have you noticed that branding has gotten
more minimalist over the past ten years or so? You can thank the contemporary art movement for doing
that.

Ethnic woman line art icons.

2. FOUND OBJECTS

Taking something that people view as useless, and then using it in a unique way in order to
make artwork is one of the most important movements that currently exist in contemporary artwork.
The idea is that things that we often view as junk are actually more valuable than we think that they are.
Everything you find can be used to tell a story, or to create new diverse perspectives that we’re looking
for when we attend an art exhibition. The found objects movement is one of the most important
movements in all of contemporary art currently.

Out of this World Recycled found object.

3. LARGE-SCALE ART
49 | P a g e
CONTEMPORARY ARTS ustarirhicamae@gmail.com
Creating something huge to express diverse perspectives in artwork is incredibly popular, even
today. Over the past forty years, large scale art, and art that includes the environment has come into its
own as one of the most important movements within contemporary art. That’s why you often see
modern art pieces alongside buildings, or as huge structures out in the open.

Large Scale; Street Art Mural Painting

With every new age of art, there are new unique techniques that define how the movement develops.
For contemporary art, among many techniques, you can find techniques such as minimalism, found
objects, and large scale paintings. Each of these bring their own unique perspective into the artistic
community, and each is valued as a pick for a technique that is most influential in contemporary art.
Look out for these when you’re out at an exhibition next, you’ll find that they’re much more relevant
than you perhaps think that they are.
