The correlation of the permissible variations according to tolerance classes A, B and C to the
spring wire grades will be found in the relevant quality specifications or technical conditions
of delivery (see Section 4).
4. Material (to be stated when ordering)
Round spring wire according to this Standard is preferably made in steels according to
DIN 17223 Sheet 1 Round spring steel wire, quality specifications, patented drawn spring wire
made of unalloyed steels and
DIN 17223 Sheet 2 Round spring steel wire, quality specifications, quenched and tempered spring

5. Weight
The weights indicated in the Table have been calculated from the cross-section on the basis of
a density of
7.85 kg/dm-5 for steel, and
8.73 kg/dm' for SnEz6.
For other materials the weights should be calculated according to the density concerned.
6. Mode of delivery
The spring wires are usually supplied in coils. The weights and dimensions of the coils shall
be agreed when ordering and stated in clear text.
7. Checking accuracy to size
Accuracy to size is checked with limit snap gauges or a micrometer.

Explanations
She earlier issue of DIN- 2076 "Spring steel wire, round, patented and drawn
spring-hard" (February 1944) was a combination of a quality specification
and a dimension standard. To bring it into line with the layout adopted in
other standards of like kind the Standard has been divided into quality
specifications and dimension specifications in the course of the present
revision. This was carried out in conjunction with the revision of
DIN 17223 Sheet 1 "Patented drawn spring wire made of unalloyed steels".
This standard now includes the provisions regarding the tensile strength of
the wires - with some of the values changed - which were previously con-
tained in DIN 20?6.
In this way the present new issue of DIN 2076 has become purely a dimension
standard. At the same time its scope has been widened to include spring
wires made of non-ferrous metals. The other amendments compared with the
earlier issue of the Standard are linked with the provisions for spring
steel wires in DIN 17223 Sheet 1. In keeping with the grade classification
adopted in the latter standard there are now only three tolerance
classes A, B and C; at the same time the values for the permissible diameter
variation of the previous grades 7, IV and II have been taken over unchanged.
The previous wire grade III has been deleted. The further reduction in the
number of tolerance classes advocated from various sides during the dis-
cussions has not been put into effect in the present version of the Standard; ,
this question will be re-examined at the next revision of DIN 2076. •—'
A few minor alterations in the nominal widths for the wire diameters have
made it possible to secure closer matching to the R 20 preferred number
series. Certain discrepancies still retained owe their presence to the fact
that some of the nominal widths at variance with the preferred number series
have become established on a wide scale; similarly, those values of the pre-
ferred number series which are not commonly used in the spring wire industry
have either not been included in DIN 2076 or are given in brackets.
