INTRODUCTION

Background of Research

(Paragraph 1 – Introducing your topic, what is your topic all about) HIV stands for the

Human Immunodeficiency Virus which causes the Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome

(AIDS), a condition in which the body’s immune system is attacked, weakened and damaged by

the virus. The virus then interferes with the body’s ability to produce anti-bodies which make

the individual prone to infection that leads to complication which resulted to death (DOH and

National Epidemiology Center).

(Paragraph 2- History, past cases, what happened long time ago about your topic) For

decades, the Philippines has been infected with the global AIDS crisis. There is now a full-

blown AIDS crisis in the country, as seen in the growing statistics. According to Dr. Eric Tayag,

Director of the National Epidemiology Center (NEC), online social networking contributes to the

rise in the cases of human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

(HIV/AIDS) in the country according to a study conducted by the Department of Health (DOH).

(Paragraph 3 – present situation, short description of present situations) Based on the

presentation of Dr. Genesis Samonte, Chief of the HIV Surveillance Unit of the National

Epidemiology Center of the Department of Health (DOH-NEC), that the Philippines now has 11

cities with an HIV incidence (or infection) rate greater than 5%. Puerto Princesa is one of these

cities. Despite long boasting of a “low and slow” infection rate, the Philippines is now one of

only 7 countries worldwide where the rate of HIV infection is still increasing. In 2015, there

were 22 new HIV cases reported every day - that is nearly one new infection every hour.
New HIV infections are an especially big problem among 15-24 years old in the country.

Part of the problem is that many people having sex, and having sex without using condoms. We

have incredibly low condom use even among people engaging in high-risk sex. Risky sexual

behavior includes having sex with commercial sex workers, men having sex with men, and

having sex with multiple partners. We also have high rates of injecting drug use, with many

people sharing needles.

(Paragraph 4 – Present your purpose, or what is the purpose of your study)It is in this

context that the researcher found the sense of urgency to do a research about the knowledge and

attitude of senior high school towards HIV/AIDS. Believing that this young people as one of the

vulnerable groups must be informed comprehensively of the issues related to HIV/AIDS, which

is the main purpose of this investigation. It will also look into the knowledge and attitude of the

youth towards HIV/AIDS transmission, discrimination, and stigmatization.
