The Grip

• Forehand grip
• Also known as the “shake hands” grip.
• The handle of the racket is held as if you are
shaking hands with the racket.

• Also known as “frying pan grip”
• Hand is rotated slightly to the left and the thumb
is placed flat against the side level for additional
power.
• Most of the time, this is the weakest way of
holding the racket especially for the backhand.

Stroke
The forehand and backhand manner of hitting the shuttle. The
direction or path which the shuttle takes after being hit. Forehand stroke. Image retrieved

• Forehand Stroke
• Any shot struck on the racket side of the player’s body.
Used to return shuttle from right side of body.
• Backhand Stroke
• Any shot taken from the side away from the racket. Used Backhand stroke. Image retrieved

• Overhand Stroke
• Used to return a high shot. When using this stroke, the
player’s arms and hands are fully extended.

Stroke
• Drop Shot
• Any shot that drops immediately after crossing the net.
• Drive
• A flat shot used to make opponent move from side to side to

• A powerful shot used to get the shuttle to land on the


opponent’s side as swiftly as possible.
• Clear the lob/Clear
• A defensive stroke used by a player to make time to return
to position as the shuttle is made to move as far away from
the net as possible.
• Overhead Clear- usually taken from backcourt positions
• Forehand Clear- usually taken from forecourt positions.

Service
A defensive stroke taken 3 feet away from the short service
line. This stroke is used to direct the shuttle above the net in
order to initiate the game.
• Long Short Serve
• Shuttle should cross the net and reach the short
service line of the opponent
• Long High Serve
• Shuttle crosses the net and reaches within six inches
from the rear boundary line
• Drive Serve
• Shuttle will travel in a direct line towards a certain Service. Image retrieved from:

Clearing the Difficulties (Terminologies)


• Ace- good service unable to be hit by the racket
• Backhand- stroke made on the opposite of the racket
side
• Bird- alternative term for shuttlecock
• Clear- term for LOB, a high shot that falls near the
backline
• Drive- straight horizontal stroke close to the net
• Drop- a low shot close to the net that falls
immediately after crossing
• Fault- any action against the rules that results in a Drop in a rally. Image retrieved from:

Clearing the Difficulties (Terminologies)


• Forehand- stroke from the racket side
• Hand-out- a loss of service
• Let- when the shuttle hits the net and falls on the
proper side of the court
• Match- a set of games
• Net flight- a shot in which the shuttle follows the net
• Rally- continuous and consecutive hits on the shuttle
by players
• Setting the game- settles a 13-all or 14-all score

Rules of Badminton
Badminton is usually played by a player or a team
against another in a best of three match.
• Scoring
• If the bird is lead to land on the opponent’s play
area
• If the bird is hit out of play
• Deciding the first service
• Usually done with a coin toss, racket spin or
tossing the bird
