Simulation of distillation column on Aspen Hysys

AIM:
Design two distillation column configurations to separate the all three streams with 99 %
purity using Aspen Hysys.

A mixture containing equimolar of Benzene, toluene and xylene is to be separated into three
streams with the help of 2 column configurations. The overall objective of this problem is to
separate the feed stream into three streams with 99% purity of Benzene, toluene and xylene
respectively with less total annualized cost (TAC).
Feed conditions:
Temperature: 30C
Pressure: 200 Kpa
Flow rate: 100 kgmole/hr

THEORY:
Aspen HYSYS (or simply HYSYS) is a chemical process simulator used to mathematically
model chemical processes, from unit operations to full chemical plants and refineries.
HYSYS is able to perform many of the core calculations of chemical engineering, including
those concerned with mass balance, energy balance, vapor-liquid equilibrium, heat
transfer, mass transfer, chemical kinetics, fractionation, and pressure drop. HYSYS is used
extensively in industry and academia for steady-state and dynamic simulation, process
design, performance modelling, and optimization.

PROCEDURE:

 Open Aspen Hysys, click on New to start a new project.

 Enter components (physical properties). Choose from the list/search the name of the
components and select.
 Here choose benzene, Toluene, Xylene (p Xylene) as per qn
 Once you've added the components, go to the fluid packages file in the side window and
choose the model according to the requirement of your design.
 The fluid package is simply a package of thermodynamic properties and conditions. It can be
applied according to the engineer's requirements. Here choose Antoine package. The data for
that package is immediately shown after clicking.
 Once physical and chemical properties have been added, go to the simulation.
 Blue stream denotes material stream and red stream denotes energy stream. Now pick and
drop the particular model from the model palette and depict the flow sheet. Select "Separator"
as the main component. Connect the feed stream to the model.
 Add the material stream for feed, by inserting the values for the flow rate, temp, pressure etc
in the composition tab.
 When you click next, you get the data for the liquid stream. Now add the details for all the
streams.
 Once everything is input, you can view the product fractions in the "compositions" tab. Adjust
your inputs according to the purity of the output required
 Generate plot for the required data. This helps analyse the results of your design. Perform the
same steps for the second distillation column as well.
