LET US REVIEW

When we were young, we were taught to ask permission before

going out or coming in, and before using or taking something from
others. It is a courteous way to do things and also to avoid
misunderstandings in life. Little did we know that these ways of living have
something to do in our lesson called modals.

One of the many types of modals is the modal of permission. For today,
we will find out more about this modal. Come with me as we discover more
about this.

Permission comes from the idea of permit.

What comes into your mind when we say the word “permission”? Just
share your thoughts with us.

_____________________ _____________________

Try to think of five (5) situations in life wherein you need to ask
permission. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.

1. ____________________________________________________________________
2. ____________________________________________________________________
3. ____________________________________________________________________
4. ____________________________________________________________________
5. ____________________________________________________________________

LET US STUDY
Do you like music? Come with me to a concert and learn
how to ask permission. Listen to these modal verbs in this story.

Last Saturday, my favorite band was playing a concert, and I wanted

to be close to the stage.
Girlie: May I stand here?
Guy: Sure!
After the concert,
I wanted to go backstage and meet the band.
Girlie: Can I go backstage?

Guy: You can, but only for a few minutes.

Backstage, I wanted to take a picture with the band.
Girlie: Could I take a picture with the band? www.pixabay.com
Guy: Certainly!

1. _______________
2. _______________
3. _______________

Modal Verbs of Permission give us the signal if we are allowed to do

or say something to someone.

 We use may, could and can to ask for permission

 May and Could are more polite and can is less polite.
 may/could/can + I + verb

More Polite Less Polite

May I play your guitar? Can I play your guitar?
Could I bring my bag at the Can I bring my bag at the
concert? concert?
May I sit here beside you? Can I sit here beside you?

Note: Both are grammatically correct, however, may and could are
more polite than can.
We use may and can to give permission but we don’t use could to
give permission.

We say…

Could I take a video during the ( / ) Yes, you may.

concert? ( / ) Yes, you can.
( x ) Yes, you could.

her 18th birthday. You are invited and you will be part of the 18 gifts.
Create a short script on how are you going to ask permission from your
parents so that you can attend the celebration. Use may, could and can to

LET US APPRECIATE

It is not what you say; it is how you say it. Lots of things in life
became chaotic because people fail to consider the feelings of others.
Respect is a very important aspect of having a good relationship with others.
Asking permission will lead to harmonious relationship with others.
However, failure to do this will lead to fights and resentments.

This lesson gives us a clear view of what we are going to do, what and
how are we going to say it as we ask permission.

5
Now that we are in the New Normal because of the pandemic brought
about by the Covid-19, how will you approach your parents if you want to
earn some money by online selling of your baked cookies?

Remember to use polite expressions in asking for permission. Do this

on your paper.
