Session 8 & 9: Truth vs. False Claim Activity

MODULE ACTIVITY – Truth vs. False Claim (To be presented the following week)

Instructions: Read each statement carefully. Distinguish if the statement is expressing truth or is a false
claim. If the statement is true, write the word Truth and False if otherwise. Seek more complex truths
through research. Write the evidences on the space provided.

go, rumors flow. Entire careers, in
fact, have been dedicated to creating
it, spreading it, quashing it and
corralling it. In his new book, The
Watercooler Effect, Nicholas
DiFonzo, a professor of psychology at
the Rochester Institute of Technology,
True examines the gossip that buzzes
through every community, explaining
why people feel so compelled to
devour and perpetuate rumors, and
what effect that has on society at
large. DiFonzo spoke with TIME's
Jeremy Caplan about some of
history's worst rumors, the
peculiarities of Web gossip, why "no
comment" is the wrong answer and
why certain presidential candidates
should be more aggressive about
battling rumors about them. (Caplan,
2008)
8. Human beings, by nature, are good.
Our nature is inherently good. We are
born with an ability to distinguish right
from wrong. But we are not exempt
from acting violently or selfishly.
That’s what cynics get wrong when
they want to describe our nature as
evil. They only see one side. And use
wars and violent acts to make their
point. We should not confuse an act
with our nature. That wars exist
True doesn’t mean that humans are
predisposed to violence. As
education expert Alfie Kohn said,
every society has made pottery, but
that doesn’t mean we have a pottery-
making gene. The good and bad
debate is endless. We are not either
good or bad, but both. Buddhism
encourages us to be cautious about
opposing concepts. Thinking in binary
terms is deceiving. Good and evil are
two sides of the same coin. We must
integrate both. (Razetti, n.d.)

If you don't have anything nice to say, 10. If you don’t have anything good to say, don’t say

True again, we bring negativity into our
lives without realizing the negative
things we say about people are like

quick to please and enjoys making
people happy, the world of negativity
and heavy criticism has come my way
via my writing online. It's hard
sometimes to put your thoughts out
there and refrain from reading
comments from people who do not
know you, but who feel obligated to
reply just because they have a
keyboard and an opinion.

B. ESSAY WRITING

1. Does truth always matter to you?

Yes, it does. The truth is always, in every situation, the most accurate method to determine cause, effect
and resolution. If you don’t like the effect then you can disseminate but that’s always a mistake, even
when it comes to ‘little white lies to spare feelings’.

2. Do we have to speak and seek for what is true all the time? Explain your answer.
Yes, because it sets you free, it gives you inner strength of character. And above all, it gives you a good
night sleep. But if you lie then you need to engineer the whole story and make it fail proof all your life, for
example if I say I was a topper in my 10th standard exam. I will have to remember this as a fact in all my
future conversations which is too much of an unnecessary load on my brain, memory and emotions. A lie
is ok for an exception when its saving someone's life or job etc. but don't use it too much for bragging
about yourself.

3. How do you judge the truth? What are the ways that you tried to do in search for truth?
Useful truth is what matters. The only truth, really actually, that matters. And one can really know it. It is
encountered in experience and known and tested and proved (not a one-time thing, an every-time thing)
in use. Skeptic inquiry does the trick. Reject final conclusion. Always ready for something you won’t get if
you’re stuck on certainty: your grasp of truth to improve. Always ready for the stubborn fact that forces
scrutiny and reconciliation. Accept best most compelling demonstration available: a provisional
conclusion, for a purpose: to act, and to further investigate. Every act from a provisional conclusion is a
further investigation. It is a test. Make it real: with a sincere attempt to falsify. You won’t be disappointed.
