WEEK 11-13: Achieving Goals: How to Take Down Notes

INTRODUCTION:

In the advent of technology, computer, smartphone, iPod or tablet and the like can be effective tools on how
to capture important ideas and organize them from the interlocutor. Students can easily take a picture of the slide-
presentation, record the voice of the speaker and take a screenshot of the handout. Then, instantly it will upload or
send it to other students using the Internet, Bluetooth, SHAREit, AirDrop, etc. With that manner, perhaps technology
diminishes the essential part of holistic learning from the students. Strauss (2018) stated that the level of engagement
involved in writing by hand is important which helps the students improve their handwriting skills through audio and
visual. On the other hand, one group of adult learners was told to write notes while another typed the text. Surprisingly,
those who wrote using their hands were found to have a deeper level of learning rather than the latter. It helps our
muscles and mind to perform well while taking down notes.
Congruently, listening and writing skills can be developed by practicing note taking, it enriches the method of
learning of the students through thinking, questioning, reacting, analyzing, recognizing and summarizing. Note taking
also promotes accuracy on recording information which the students sharpen their memory with regard to annotate
the important notes. In this lesson, it will further discuss the following: importance of taking down notes, strategies on
how to take down notes effectively, and 5 tips on how to take down notes.

OUTCOMES: At the end of the lesson, students can:

1. Identify the importance of taking down notes;
2. Review the techniques of taking down notes; and
3. Apply the techniques of note taking by watching the video clip and answer the questions given by the
instructor/professor
MODULE LESSON:

Importance of Taking Down Notes

Aleman (2014) discussed that despite of technology and innovation, still it has been proven that take down notes
differs the understanding and efficiently boost the retention of the students on the input. Further, it develops the
academic success of the students because of the aforesaid. These are the 6 important ways on how to improve note
taking.

1. Improves focus and attention to detail

It enhances the attention span of the students on the lecture and gives better understanding on the
topic.
2. Promotes active learning
It increases the productivity of the students in learning process by acquiring the input from the
speaker.
3. Boosts comprehension and retention
The students will develop their memory retention by writing the content and other important details.
4. Teaches to prioritize skills
The students will learn how to get the important key words and elicits the unnecessary contents.
5. Improves organization skills
It engages the students to know how to arrange and group the important events or situations on the topic.
6. Increases creativity
The students will have the ability to organize effectively the particular subject or idea to expand the text in
easiest yet imaginative way.

Glenn-Cowan (1995) prepared eight strategies on how to take down notes effectively:

1. Read the textbook that you will be using in the lecture before the class
2. Bring the materials needed in the lecture
3. Make a note of some important questions that occur to you as you read
4. Familiarize yourself in capturing important ideas
5. Complete reading and written assignments before the deadline
6. Accept that you are a responsible student; recognize and use symbols of important notes
7. Take a seat near to the teacher, away from the windows and people who might distract you
8. Review your notes
5 Tips on How to Take Down Notes

1. Write and do not type the text

2. Use key concepts and not complete sentences
3. Use visuals or symbols
4. Use an outline
5. Understand your notes
MODULE ACTIVITY 1:

Assessment (Video-clip Presentation)

The instructor/professor will play the video entitled Grit: The power of passion and perseverance by Angela Lee
Duckworth.

Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H14bBuluwB8

Directions: Based on the video, answer the following questions on a ½ sheet of paper and apply the importance of
note taking. (5 points each)

1. What does your grit score mean?

It is the extent to which individuals are able to maintain focus and interest, and persevere in obtaining long-term

goals.

2. Is perseverance a trait? Why?

Perseverance is not a natural trait. People are not born with perseverance; they decide to have perseverance. A

person gains perseverance when he/she makes the decision that no matter what I am going to make it, and I’ll bear

all the pain that comes to me in the pursuit of my dreams.

3. What is grit and perseverance?

Grit is passion and perseverance for very long term goals. Grit is having stamina. Grit is sticking with your future,

day in, day out, not just for the week, not just for the month, but for years, and working really hard to make that future

a reality. Grit is living life like it's a marathon, not a sprint.

Perseverance is a choice, before you choose to persevere, you were in the face of either/or, either fly or

persevere. This option is needed in such situations as goal achievement or dealing with adversity, it must be called

forth when there is a goal to achieve or a tough context in your life.

4. How do you train grit?

First is to practice. Deliberate practice means learning as you go, getting feedback from your experience as well

as from others. Next is to find my purpose. Purpose is anything you can develop an interest in over long term.

Practice is useless if what I’m practicing is something I don't feel purposeful about or can be highly interested in. Of

course, the word purpose gets thrown around a lot. What's important isn't that I find some natural calling, but

instead find something that I can readily dive deeper into the more that I learn. Then I’ll find hope in everything.
Failure is often inevitable, but if we learn to embrace failure as an opportunity to learn, improve, and then get back

up again, we're more likely to succeed in future attempts. To develop more grit, I must start with hope, and learn

that it's alright to fail as long as you don't give up or quit. And lastly, giving myself time. Time to devote myself to

practice, purpose, and developing from failure. Having something that I can be highly interested in, something that I

can deliberately practice and readily get feedback on, something where I hope that I can succeed, are all

important. The key is, of course, giving myself time to practice and learn and stay in the game.

Journal Writing

Is taking down notes important to you as a student? How can note taking improve your academic performance? Cite
examples showing its importance.
Is taking down notes important to you as a student? Yes. Taking down notes is an important part of the life of every

student like me, especially I’m in the medical field. When I am reading or listening, taking notes helps me to

concentrate. As listening and reading are interactive tasks, taking notes help me make sense of the text.

How can note taking improve your academic performance? Taking down notes does not mean writing down every

word that I hear; I need to actively decide what is important and how is related to what I have already written. Notes

help me to maintain a permanent record of what I have read or listened to. This is useful when revising in the future

for examinations or other reasons.

Taking down notes is very important to me as a student because it improves my focus and attention to detail.

Developing note-taking skills engages me as a student, requiring me to focus and increase my attention to detail. I

sometimes feel asleep when listening to my teacher discussing. Taking down notes is one of the ways that saved

me from being distracted to fall asleep in class.
