Christian understanding of the
reality of sin
On Human Suffering:
Many Filipinos today are tempted to see
very little hope for our country. With all the
corruption, violence, and natural calamities
besetting our people, we cannot blame them
for their pessimism. But as Christians, we
cannot afford to lose hope.

Common reasons for helping

God’ s Mysterious Ways

•He lost his possessions, his servants, and his
whole family…and he even suffered a wound
that stretched from his head to his feet.
The Catechism, paragraph 27 says: “ The desire
for God is written in the human heart because
man is created by God and for God; and God
never ceases to draw man to himself. Only in
God will he find the truth and happiness he
never stops searching for.”
The reality of human suffering
Many Filipinos today are tempted to see very
little hope for our country. With all the
corruption, violence, and natural calamities
besetting our people, we cannot blame them for
their pessimism. But as Christians, we cannot
afford to lose hope.
God’ s Plan for Us
God made the world a place of harmony and
peace and gave everything necessary for human
beings to live fully in this kind of world. Sadly, the
first human beings abused their gifts.
We conveniently blame God for the unexplained
cause of our suffering (e.g. COVID-19 Pandemic)
and accuse Him of punishing us. We miss what
Job learned from his experience—that God is
always in control.
Trusting in God's Love
God transforms all human evil by His infinite
love, revealed to us in and through Jesus Christ,
who sends us His Holy Spirit so we can follow Him
in trusting the Father.
Christian Message
As Christians, we are called to trust, especially
amidst suffering. God knows and acts upon all
human suffering by continuously creating and
sustaining free and responsible persons for their
lives and community.

God certainly does not approve of sin and the

suffering it causes. He does not want us to sin
and hurt ourselves. But He allows it to happen
because of the greater good of creating us free
so we can love and receive love. Had He not
created us with freedom and intellect we would
not have the capacity to share in His divine
goodness.

THE SOCIAL MISSION OF THE CHURCH
Acts of Charity
Definition: Ways of directly showing love for
one’s neighbor and addressing their needs.
The direct approach appeals to the personal
conscience of the members of the Church,
particularly those with the means to help, and
inspires heroic works among the missionaries
and some religious brothers and sisters. The
Church’s approach of serving the least, the
last, and the lost. Simply handing out
temporary aid to the victims was not enough.
Other basic human needs were not met by
the generous immediate actions of
individuals. Thus, society and the Church
came to realize that more was needed to
respond systematically and effectively to
modern problems of social injustice.
Structural Change
The Church deals with social structures and
social issues that cause harm to people. It
speaks out against unjust socio-economic
and political systems and works for social
transformation as part of its total
commitment to helping the needy.
You realize now that within the Church there are
different ways of carrying out its social mission.
Being part of the Church, we now ask ourselves
what specific things we can do.
Awareness of the Suffering of Others

Being aware of those who suffer also requires us
to be sensitive to and critical of the unjust
systems and structures in society. We must know
how to read the signs of the times.
Responding according to One’ s Means and
Capabilities
Let us assess ourselves and figure out what we
have that enables us to help. Remember, we
cannot give what we do not have.
Jesus tells us, therefore, that we help according
to what is given to us: our talents, time,
resources, etc.
Social responsibility requires good self-
knowledge. Keep in mind that we are called by
God where we are presently at.
