6. Science Investigatory Project (SIP) write-ups in three (3) copies with complete ISEF Forms, in
(3) copies and duly accomplished Forms (Enclosures 3A-C and 4) shall be submitted to this Office
(Attention: Ma. Shiela R. Suarez-Saet, Education Program Supervisor) on or before August 28, 2019
at the CID, Division Office.

7. A Registration Fee of P 50.00 shall be charged each participants for the honorarium of judges
in the Science Investigatory Projects Category, food of the contest officials/judges and other expenses
relative to the conduct of the activity.

Intel International Rules for Pre-college Science Research: Guidelines for Science and Engineering Fair
2018-2019 and required forms from

secondary levels.

THE HOST SCHOOL

The MARINDUQUE SciLympics 2019 will be hosted by Torrjos Central School, Torrijos,
Marinduque for the Elementary & Secondary levels.

In addition, the host school is expected to:


1. prepare a short opening program;
2. provide information board at the entrance to guide the participants in the contest
venue;
3. provide labels for the contest venue;
4. provide the needed facilities such as chairs, tables, LCD projectors and screens,
sound system and lights. They shall also coordinate in the room assignment of the
participants, BOJs and the PMT; and
5. submit narrative report including documentation with pictures and consolidated
result of the contest as well as the financial report to the Division.

MECHANICS OF THE CONTEST

A. SCIENCE QUIZ BEE


1. This contest aims to enhance development of critical science thinking skills of the
students.
2. Each district will have 2 contestants per grade level (Grades 3 to 6), while in the
secondary level, all schools are allowed to send one (1) participant (Grades 7-12).
3. The coverage of the quiz is based on K to 12 learning competencies.
4. There will be two (2) phases in this event.
5. Phase 1 is an elimination round where contestants shall be given a 35- item
written test for the elementary level and 50-item test for the secondary level. The
15 highest scorers from the secondary level and the highest scorers from the
elementary level will remain for the Phase 2.
In phase 2, the Quiz Master will ask 3 sets of questions: 5 questions each for easy,
average and difficult with 1point, 2 points and 3 points respectively.
6. In the second phase, these rules shall apply:
a. English shall be the official language in the conduct of the Quiz in all levels.
b. The quiz master shall read each question twice and the time shall start
only after the quiz master says "go."
c. Each question must be answered within the time allocated ten (10)
seconds for easy questions, twenty (20) seconds for average questions
and thirty (30) seconds for difficult questions. If a contestant wishes to
change his answer, the former answer should be crossed-out and must
encircle the final answer.
d. Use of calculators shall not be allowed.
e. In this phase, each contestant shall be provided with a sheet of paper
where to write the answer.
f. The paper will be raised by the contestant after the time limit for the
judges to evaluate the answers.
g. In case of inquiry, only the contestant is allowed to raise question which
shall be addressed orally to the Chairman of the Board of Judges and
should be done before the next question is read.
h. Any form of coaching from the audience or the coaches to the contestants
during the actual quiz shall be a ground for disqualification of the
contestant being coached.
i. After the two phases, all points shall be added to determine the winner.
j. In case of a tie, a clincher round shall be administered. The first contestant
who answers the question correctly shall be declared winner.
k. Wrong spelling is wrong and therefore shall not be given a corresponding
point.
l. The decisions of the Board of Judges are final and irrevocable.

B. SCIENCE AND ARTS


1. SCI-MATH CHESS
Sci-Math Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a
checkered game board with 64 squares arranged in an eight by eight grid.

Game Mechanics
a. One participant for Board 1 and one participant for Board 2 for boys and
girls. Two boys/2 girls for the elementary and secondary level.
b. Double elimination will be followed as a standard of rule of elimination.
Other system may apply upon the agreement of the coaches.
c. One hour as a total time is given to the players (30 minutes for each
player).
d. A point system will apply to determine who wins the game.
e. The game ends when….
i. the highest official is captured
ii. The time allocation was consumed or lapses
iii. The opponent commits 2 illegal moves.
f. In the event of a stalemate (no more moves) point system will apply. Each
player will count their points and whoever has the highest score wins the
game.
g. In the event of perpetual moves (both players move the same location
and pieces five times) each player will count their points and whoever has
the highest score wins the game.
h. When the time lapses or the opponent timer drops, the highest official
will be considered captured by the opponent.
i. In the event of an illegal move, a 15-point deduction will be given to the
player who committed the illegal move and the piece that was moved
illegally will be returned to the original location. On the second illegal
move, the highest official will be considered captured by the opponent.
j. In the event that there will be no movement, but the score is tied, there
will be no another game for the two players.
k. There will be no CHECK and OPEN CHECK for this game. You can directly
capture the highest official whenever possible.
l. Castling is allowed, be sure to move the highest official first.
m. When the lowest official reaches the opponents side, it can be replaced
by an official as desired by the player (from he lowest to the highest rank).

2. SCI-SPOTLIGHT COMPETITION] (Team)


a. This is a team category. There shall be 3 contestants per district to form a team
preferably with the following qualities.
a.1 A member who is good in English/Communication
a.2 A member who is good in Computer, Graphics & Editing

a.3 A member who will put up everything together


b. The presentation will focus on the story of their respective school and the teams’
effort to care for the environment, this includes the following:
b.1 the planning
b.2 the proposal
b.3 the full report
b.4 the photos, videos and other documents that supports their
campaign/drive in their school
c. The team will create a presentation which may contain Video clips, Photos, Labels,
Music and other related materials needed for the creation of the presentation.
d. The team will present their presentation to the board of judges using MS
Powerpoint or in Video Format. A copy must be submitted to the judges in a clean
USB with no other content but the final presentation video.
e. The team has to bring their own laptop for the presentation.
f. There will be a total of 6 minutes including the entrance (starting) and the exit
(credits).
g. Should your presentation exceed the time allotment it will be stopped.

3. Sci-Poster Making Contest (Elementary and Secondary)


a. There shall be only one (1) contestant per district.
b. Each contestant shall bring a 1/2 size illustration board and must use the
white background and vertical format.
c. The medium for visual artistry shall only be oil pastel. This will be provided by
the contestant. Borrowing of materials from other contestants will not be
allowed.
d. The contestants shall be guided by a theme to be announced on the contest
date. All artworks must be done on the spot and must be completed within
the allotted time of two hours.
e. Finished outputs should not contain label or name that may identify the
contestant and his/her school.
f. Only the contestants are allowed in the contest area.
g. The criteria for judging for the Poster Making Contest are as follows:

4. ON THE SPOT COLLAGE MAKING (Elementary & Secondary)


1. One contestant per district will be allowed to join the contest.
2. The COLLAGE would revolve around the theme to be announced on the
contest date. The contestant should use indigenous and recyclable materials
that are limited to 4-6 kinds of materials.
3. All the materials shall be provided by the contestants. Outlining of
masterpiece before the contest is strictly not allowed. The required base
paper to be used during the contest is illustration board, 20’’x 30”.
4. The allocated time for the contest is two hours, after which all entries shall
be submitted to the contest administrator. Contestant may submit his/her
poster earlier without waiting for the lapse of two hours. Late submission
shall be deducted 1% from the total points for every extension of five
minutes.
5. Finished outputs should not contain label or name that may identify the
contestant and his/her school.
6. Judging shall be based on the following:

5. ESSAY WRITING CONTEST MECHANICS & CRITERIA


1. Student essayists shall write an argumentative essay on a topic/photo related to Science
theme to be announced on the contest date.
2. Essays shall follow the five (5) paragraph structure — introduction, body, and conclusion.
3. Essays shall be written on the spot for two (2) hours.
4. All entries must be written in English and must have at least 250-300 words.
5. Upon submission of the results to the committee, judges’ decision shall be considered final
and irrevocable.

6. SCI-PHOTO JOURNALISM COMPETITION

Guidelines & Mechanics


1. The entries must cover acts of protecting environment.
2. The photos must either be in colored or in black and white. Digitally altered photos are not
allowed. The size of the picture is 8.5” x 11” photo paper with or without border.
3. There will be 2 entries per district which must be accompanied by the corresponding
electronic copy of the photos save in raw file.
4. Entry form must be submitted together with the picture and caption or brief description of
background of the photo such as where and when it was taken (barangay, city, municipality)
5. Entry must be the contestant’s original work.
6. Only photos taken by digital cameras are allowed. A single “High Dynamic Range” photo
produced from multiple exposures and Black & White Photos are acceptable. Photos taken
by film camera, fisheye lens, and stitched panoramas are not eligible. Post processing of the
image is limited to cropping and color enhancements, including shadows and highlights only.

7. Entries should include the photo’s metadata (ISO, Aperture Value, and Shutter Speed).
8. Photo must be in JPEG format with at least 300 dpi and a maximum file size of 10 MB.
9. Photo must not contain any copyrighted material including artworks and other photos.
10. Entry must not contain date stamps, watermarks or any text on the image.
11. Entry must not have been awarded in any other photo contests and/or commercially
published whether for news, advertising or otherwise.
12. Filename of the photo must be in the format “SURNAME_PHOTO TITLE”.
13. Entry will be judged on the contest date using the following criteria:
a. Visual Appeal/Wow Factor 20%
(Does the photo entry tells a story and stand on its own as complete and
outstanding?)
b. Originality/Creativity 20%
(How the Entrant was able to convey their idea, message or thought in an original
and imaginative way through their lens and showcase their personal originality and
technique to influence how the image is presented and interpreted).
c. Expression of Theme 20%
(Was the theme displayed in the photo appropriate to the story being told in the
Photo).
d. Impact 20%
(What you feel when you first view the Entry? Does the photo evoke an emotion and
imagination from the viewer?)
e. Presentation 10%
(Having that finished look, was the Photo Entry truly ready to be entered or were
some finishing touches still required?)
f. Color balance 10%
(Can bring harmony to a photo. Do the tones work together, effectively supporting
the image? )

14. Contestants will be required to provide the following information upon submission of entry:

C. SCIENCE TEACHING
1. Strategic Intervention Material (SIM) for the Science Least Mastered
Competency in any grade level.
a. The Strategic Intervention Material should be an original work of the teacher.
b. The size of the SIM is as follows: orientation: portrait, paper size: short bond
paper (8.5” x 11”).
c. It should focus on the Critical Content/Difficult Competency.
d. Presentation shall be for 5-7 minutes and 5 minutes for the interrogation by
the Panel of Judges.
e. An action research must be included as an attachment to the developed SIM.
f. The SIM shall be rated according to the following criteria

D. Shout Out
In creating the Shout Out, there should be a one-minute video presentation which
involves both the elementary and secondary level in one presentation. Include in the presentation
the skills and attitude that the science students should possess. Save the one-minute presentation
in a CD for judging on the contest date.

E. SCIENCE FAIR
1. Science Innovation Expo
Innovation Expo which is to be participated in by the Junior and Senior High School is designed
to showcase products and innovation of learners. It aims to crowd-source and display science
and technology innovations and solutions to everyday challenges. Furthermore, it also serves
as a venue to exchange ideas on Research and Development and Science & Technology. The
format of the paper is found in Enclosure No. 6.

2. The Research Competition


The competition will be conducted among the Elementary, Junior and Senior High School
students from both public and private schools. The first to third place winners in each of the categories
at the District/Cluster Level shall represent the District/Cluster to the MARINDUQUE SciLympics 2019.

In categorizing the Science Investigatory Project, please refer to the table below for the Fair
Division and Field of Study.

The participation of the Division to the Science Fair shall be clustered into two types: Life
science and Physical Science both for the individual and team categories for the elementary level,
while Science Fair in the Secondary level, shall be clustered into four types: Life Science, Physical
Science, Robotics Intelligent Machine and Science Invention Expo. Mathematics and engineering-
related projects shall join in the Physical Science Category. Elementary and Secondary levels will
compete both for the individual and team categories.

Three (3) hard copies of the manuscript must be submitted to the Division on or before August
21, 2019. Make sure that the manuscripts contain all the required forms (depending on the type of
research)including the scanned copies of the research logbook.

List of titles, proponents, schools must be emailed to the division office using this email
(ma.saet@deped.gov.ph). Please use the excel format in Enclosure Number 5.
Researchers are expected to wear formal attire during the ribbon cutting of project display,
public viewing and on-site evaluation of projects as well as during the congress.

During the congress, researchers will be given 5-7 minutes for presentation and 3-5 minutes
to answer questions from the Board of Judges.

Coach will only be allowed to enter the congress room during the actual presentation of their
contestant/s to witness the actual presentation and shall leave the room right after. Use of cameras
with flash will not be allowed to avoid distraction during the presentations.

Hard copies of SIPs shall follow the color codes of the cover, Front Page, and transparent for
the Back Page:

THE RESEARCH PROJECT

The Research Project should cover a maximum of twelve (12) months Ex. July 2018
to June 2019.

THE EXHIBIT

DISPLAY AND SAFETY REGULATIONS

The project display using set of any paper/paper board summarizes the research project and
must focus on the proponent’s work for this year’s study, and if applicable, with minimal reference to
previous research. Tarpaulins will NOT be used in support to the environmental advocacy of the
government in reducing the consumption of non-biodegradable or non-recyclable materials.

The safety regulations that must be adhered to should be consistent with the guidelines found
on page 24 of the 2018 ISEF guidelines

The following items should be seen on the project display: Abstract, Background, Objectives,

illustration in the display.

POINT SYSTEM OF THE CONTEST

1. The following point system will be used to determine the ranking of the participants in all
the events of the MARINDUQUE SciLympics 2019:

2. A champion will be declared in each of the four (4) categories both for the elementary and
secondary levels. To determine the champion per category, all the points earned in all the
events comprising the category will be added and ranked accordingly.

3. Best Performing District for Elementary and Secondary levels will also be declared after
consolidating all the points earned in the four (4) categories.

4. To determine the grand champion, all the points earned in the four (4) categories
combined elementary and secondary levels will be totaled and multiplied by its equivalent
weighted scores (see table below). The equivalent scores will be added up and ranked
accordingly.
