Drafting Pattern for
1 Household Linens
Drafting pattern is what we call the technique or method of drawing a pattern on a
certain material with accuracy and precision based on the standard measurement.
What’s In
Direction: Classify these words pertaining to the different kinds of fabric used in
making household linens according to its sources, characteristics and uses. Follow
the format on the table and write your responses in the answer sheet.
1. durable 6. tablecloth
2. made by cotton plant 7. glossy
3. absorbs moisture 8. thin

What’s New
After knowing how to prepare your project plan and identifying the tools you would
use, what should be the next thing to do?
5
What is It
Now that you know how to make your project plan as well as the materials and
tools that you will use, it is time for you to know how to draft a pattern. To be able
to create one pattern, it must be drafted first.
Drafting a pattern is the most essential part in sewing before we proceed to our
prospect project. This is then transferred on to the cloth to be cut. It minimizes the
chances of any fault during cutting on the fabric.
2. On your pattern paper, draw a vertical mark which will be the width size and
horizontal mark which will be the length size.
3. Elongate the lines to form a rectangle that will resemble a pillow.
4. Add ½ inch. seam allowances ahead the three edges of the pattern and 2
inches on the opening.
6
5. Cut the pattern.
7
Now it’s time to find out the different types of fabric fold which you will use to make
a pattern.
1. Lengthwise fold. The fabric is folded in the middle, wherein the two selvages
meet at the edge and are together, opposite the fold.
2. Crosswise fold. The fabric is folded in the middle but the two selvages are
not together, rather, the selvages are on the opposite side of the fold. In this
fold, the two raw edges meet at the edge and are together opposite the fold.
8
In laying and cutting the fabric, remember the following tips:
1. Identify which type of fabric fold you will utilize to maximize the use of the
fabric.
2. Fold the fabric with the wrong side out and then lay it on the table.
3. Make a trial placement of all the pattern pieces to economize the use of the
fabric.
4. Pin all parts of the pattern of the cloth. Make sure the pins are placed at the
right angles to the edge of the pattern, one inch from the edge. About six
inches apart for straight edges. For curved edges, the pins should nearer
each other.
5. Avoid lifting the cold while putting the pins on their places, it might change
the position of the grain line.
9
4. For long spaces, such as straight side seam, use long strokes .
1. Pleat the fabric on its lengthwise grain with the wrong side out.
10
2. Place and put the pattern you’ve made on the fabric/cloth then pin it there.
11
5. Cut the fabric.
Strictly following the suggested safety guidelines is one of the most important part
you must remember in doing a project.
Follow all the necessary instruction to reduce and eliminate as much as possible the
chances of accident/injury. Here are the list of suggested safety precautions in
making a pattern.
12
What’s More
Prepare the following materials and draft a pillowcase pattern using the following
procedures
2. On your pattern paper, draw a vertical mark which will be the width size
and horizontal mark which will be the length size.
3. Elongate the lines to form a rectangle that will resemble a pillow.
4. Add 1/2 inch. seam allowances before the three edges of the pattern and 2
inches on the opening.
5. Cut the pattern.
Materials Needed:
1. Manila Paper

What I Have Learned
Fill in the blanks with the correct word to complete the sentence. Choose your answer
from the box below.
The test of your 1.__________ and 2. __________is best shown in how you could
create or produce something like household linens, based on the 3.__________you
acquired. When drafting a 4.__________ for pillow case as well as with the table
napkins, placemats, hand towels and other household linens you want to create ,
you must put in mind that it is best to consider the 5.__________ that are really
needed to be followed correctly, carefully and religiously. We have learned two types
of fabric folding like 6.__________and 7.__________ folds, which can be both utilized to
maximize the use of the fabric. Tips in laying the pattern, 8.__________ and
transferring sewing lines on the fabric were also given for you to economize the use
of the fabric. Just to make sure that a well –drafted and properly -cut pattern would
be your output, you must have mastered all those 9. __________. Study each piece
carefully so you’ll know what part of the project it is and what you will do with it.
Moreover, put in your mind and apply all the 10.________ measures for you to follow
very strictly all the time to ensure your safety.
a. crosswise f. knowledge
b. steps g. lengthwise
c. precautionary h. cutting
d. pattern i. procedures
e. abilities j. skills
